The Front Porch Swing

I was outside working on the new coop and planting some last minute fall stuff. Someone gave me a bag of perennial leeks that I am excited about so I cleared out one of my little planting beds and got them in...still have about 100 little "pearls" left but nowhere to put them. (those little things go a long way!)

But the new coop would be done except I ran out of trim board....

I need to go take pictures!!!! I am proud! I built out the nesting boxes finally and made a goat proof door and built in wall feeder, enclosed the 2 weather sides of the bottom and made a nice door on the other side.

cant wait until I can paint it (have to let pressure treated wood dry out a bit)

Our 4 month old puppy excaped yesterday while we were at work from his pen and there was a dead pullet by the waterbowl but inside the electric fenced area where the puppy still couldn't go. I wonder if he got her and she was able to get away but died later. He has grabbed them before. but never caused damage. I hope this wasn't him, but fear it was.

:( psy. We had a horrible do attack that killed all but 2 of my silkies and most of my other birds last week. I hope its not your puppy.

How is everyone doing? I have not been on as much lately.

Yeah, same here, seems I can't get my life into any kind of order these days, even with school back in, it kind of drives me crazy....

Sorry about your birds!! MOST of your birds???

so sorry, how many did you lose?? That is really frustrating!!

My chicken addiction started when I was a teenager, I used an old dog run that was a large chain link enclosure for the chickens and some rabbits, it had a latching door, besides the cages they were in, to help keep them safe, one night some dogs that were roaming the neighborhood got in (practically broke the gate and the cages) to get to my rabbits, killed several of them, maimed some of them so badly they had to be put down and some died of heart attacks. I couldn't believe how determined they were to get in those cages, they were bent in, I had to stand on them to pull them back out. VERY, VERY frustrating!! My dad figured out whose dogs they were and went to the owners and told them and they compensated us a little for the losses, but that doesn't make up all the time and effort, sheesh!

Hope you all are doing well... trying to get the last of my extra birds sold going into the fall, we're going to try putting the birds in the greenhouse this winter, kind of free range in there (it's a full-sized greenhouse)... It was crazy cold here last winter, and we think they might do a little better in there... I only lost one bird to the cold last year, but even with extra rations they were a little thin coming out of the cold... Thought about dividing it into 2 sections so I can have at least one set of pure eggs to do some winter test hatching, hehe...

Anyone tried putting their birds in the greenhouse during the winter??

I have had chickens in my greenhouse for almost 2 years now. It was supposed to be a temporary coop, and for most of the birds is was. It's just that as I get new coops to move birds into, I keep refilling the "temporary" coop with new ones.

Last summer, we were carrying the birds across the drive to the fenced area to free-range during the day. This year I replaced some of the polycarbonate panels with hardware cloth panels so there is lots of ventilation on the hot days. I haven't decide whether I will put the polycarbonate back in for the winter, or just cover the hardware cloth panels with a tarp.

Of course, I don't try to grow anything in the greenhouses while the chickens are in it. Especially during the winter, watering plants in the greenhouse would make it way too humid for the chickens, unless you plan on keeping it well heated in the winter.
