The Front Porch Swing

that's funny, better a broody than chicks in the house, at least for me anyway!!

Yeah, same here, seems I can't get my life into any kind of order these days, even with school back in, it kind of drives me crazy....

Sorry about your birds!! MOST of your birds???

so sorry, how many did you lose?? That is really frustrating!!

My chicken addiction started when I was a teenager, I used an old dog run that was a large chain link enclosure for the chickens and some rabbits, it had a latching door, besides the cages they were in, to help keep them safe, one night some dogs that were roaming the neighborhood got in (practically broke the gate and the cages) to get to my rabbits, killed several of them, maimed some of them so badly they had to be put down and some died of heart attacks. I couldn't believe how determined they were to get in those cages, they were bent in, I had to stand on them to pull them back out. VERY, VERY frustrating!! My dad figured out whose dogs they were and went to the owners and told them and they compensated us a little for the losses, but that doesn't make up all the time and effort, sheesh!

Hope you all are doing well... trying to get the last of my extra birds sold going into the fall, we're going to try putting the birds in the greenhouse this winter, kind of free range in there (it's a full-sized greenhouse)... It was crazy cold here last winter, and we think they might do a little better in there... I only lost one bird to the cold last year, but even with extra rations they were a little thin coming out of the cold... Thought about dividing it into 2 sections so I can have at least one set of pure eggs to do some winter test hatching, hehe...

Anyone tried putting their birds in the greenhouse during the winter??

Ya, most was most. all my grow outs but the ones inside and about 5 turkeys. Plus my legbars, and all but 2 of my silkies and showgirls my marans were torn up but alive ( 4 girls in my bathroom now after trips to the vets to get sewn up) All I had left of beloved pumpkins babies. maybe 50 birds? strewn all over my property, it was very traumatic to find everyone strewn around.

The showgirls were the biggest loss, only one line is replaceable. Ill never find a sizzle showgirl blue rooster again, I think freakazoid was the only one in the world :(.

I got very lucky and a local shower took pity on me and sold me some hens and one of my customers who was going to pick up chicks got them down to me. it was painfully expensive but still a minor miracle she was willing to help and give up some of her girls. All the help from people over this lately has given me the sniffles, chicken people are so generous.

Mario bought a greenhouse ( med sized) last year for chickens! But we have not set it up, we have more projects then time.

We are taking the weekend off and going to Jeckel Island then back to work. Hopefully pick up a Light Brahma Rooster on the way home to put in with our GFF Blue Columbian Brahmas to improve type. They are nice but improvement never hurt.

I'm dropping off some birds on the way to our vacation! Gotta take advantage of passing close by other BYCers who "need" some of what we got! Right?!
DH wasn't so thrilled when I asked but said "We're dropping off........that means fewer, right?" I said "Yup"...........didn't mention 5 were going and 10 eggs are under the broody hen........

oh no, that is so awful....wish I could help but all I can do is send another virtual hug...

sigh. missing two of the three chocolate orps. I hope they just huddled down somewhere together. i hope the fox hasn't returned. Sigh. why does it always have to be my favorite chickens?????

Husband named them "the Tweedles" Tweedle-dum, Tweedle-dee, and Tweedle-do-da. The one that is left is of course male.

Oh no!! That is terrible I hope you find them. We have a fox around us too. I've got traps for her but she is a whily thing. She was coming under my window and freaking out the quail unroll mario hit her with a paintgun. Stung enough to keep hher away from the quail at least.

Broody somewhere hopefully? Everyone is constantly talking about how broody these girls are.
