The Front Porch Swing

Could I join the Porch Gang? I've read this thread and really responded to the conversations. It's so good humoured and respectful and supportive throughout. Some of the other threads can be a bit daunting for a newcomer. Nice to have what feels like sanctuary. What can bring? I do compost. I have an open mind. I did castrate two rams, with vet help. Got 10 pampered chickens. Oh, how about homemade lemonade to celebrate spring?

No, I have no idea where to get a water wiggler. I do have a digital meat thermometer through a hole and I trust that one most of all. I also have a "remote" thermometor that I used the last time that worked real well. And there is another thermometer with the doodad to read the humidity. I hope it all comes together.

That's when it finally all came together for me on temp regulation, when Fred suggested the water wiggler. I tried a bag of water and it just wasn't the same...didn't work as well. I got mine on Amazon and it has been like a miracle! The analog meat thermometer beat the digital one hands down for accuracy, so I discarded the digital one.

Here's the water wiggler...I think it also helps hold temps steady because of its mass in the incubator:

Thanks for the info!

I used one of those when I used to raise my ducks. What's so cool about it is that way you know what the temp is like on the INSIDE of the egg not the outside of it which is where it counts. I don't know what I did with the one I had. I probably tossed it or something but I still have my bator and stuff. Wondering IF one could properly sterilize one of those things to keep using it in each batch of eggs?

One of the most important things when using a LG is a constant temperature in the room where you have the incubator when in operation. In the winter time I keep mine in the bsthroom where it is 65º all of the time. In the summer time I have it in a closet so the air conditionng doesn't cause spikes. I have a tiny heater in the closet that keeps the temperature stable at 78-80º.

Mike runs the air conditioner enough to keep the humidity under control, not so much to lower the room temperature. High humidity makes it difficult for him to breathe because
he has COPD.

I don't use a wiggler, just an accurite thermometer/hygrometer combo that I bought at wal~mart. I keep the humidity at about 20% until lockdown then I raise to about 55%. I do staggered hatches by using another LG as a hatcher. I bought one of the plastic liners for the hatcher so clean up/disinfection after each hatch is easier.

My eggs go into lock down tomorrow! I'm hoping for a good hatch! I have not really done anything much with them. I have rotated every day in the turner and candled a couple of times. Other than that I have not had to mess with the incubator. I plan on using a tube and syringe to add moisture during lock down so I don't have to open the incubator. I am getting excited! I can't decide if I want to put them straight out into the brooder coop with the bigger chicks or do a tote brooder for a few days then move them.

Congrats, Lindz!

Mine go into lockdown today. I have 34/42 going in. Not too bad considering the cold weather when I collected the eggs. I have a little squeeze bottle with a long tip, the kind you see that is used to put oil in a very localized area, so I don't have to open mine either.

What humidity level are you shooting for?
I can hardly wait.!

Good Morning Everyone!!!

I had family in from Indiana yesterday, so I was gone for a while.

Welcome newcomers! I see you have met the gang. Aren't they wonderful??? I noticed that nobody has warned you about Blooie's stories. Do not have food or drink in your mouth when reading AND have kleenexes nearby. She is a hoot!

We have all kinds of critters running around. The beautiful horse over yonder is Katee. She belongs to 'Perchiegirl/Deb'. The dogs are Boots, Jake, Ben, and Ben. As far as I know the turtle doesn't have a name.

Come sit a while and tell us all about yourself!

Lisa :)
