The Front Porch Swing

I like to think I am a fairly accomplished cook, but there are few things I can't do as well as my Mom. Macaroni & Cheese, scalloped potatoes and rice pudding are always better on her table. Now, bread pudding, I can pull off pretty well. Sausage gravy is my specialty!

Have a question for some of you that might be experienced with a broody. We have had a broody on the nest for getting close to 4 weeks. We went out to candle some of her eggs because first of all, she has been out there for a long time, and I don't believe she has been off but once in all that time We put food and water next to her and I believe she is eating a little. I didn't think she probably had many eggs and not sure they would even be fertile. But back to the candling. DH picked her up so I could start candling and there were 2 chicks out!!! One was very tiny, tiny head and bobbing around like it was very weak. I don't think that one will make it. But there were probably 12-14 eggs under her and I believe there are some rotten, because you could smell them!

My question is, should we move her tomorrow with the eggs that haven't hatched, minus the smelly ones? She is not in a good place. By that, I mean she is in the barn in an empty nail bin that is about 6x14x3". It is about 3 feet off the floor, so I don't know how she planned to get them out of there!!

I do love to cook. It's gets difficult sometimes. My oldest has severe food allergies. Eggs (of all things are the worst. He's anaphylactic to those. Can't even bake with them.) Peanuts and tree nuts cause a pretty sever reaction. And catfish and shellfish are his most recent allergies. He's also asthmatic and is not feeling well at all today. Wow, I really digressed on that post. Guess cause he's on my mind right now. Trying to get him comfy so he can sleep.

Ooo, my husband has taken over the sausage gravy makin' around here. He takes that stuff seriously! We use seasoned flour from a local mill. I have family up north addicted to that stuff. I have to bring the flour up in 5lb bags for them. The love it for their fish fry!

My grandma makes the best potato salad ever. Had some at lunch! Makes it hard to like other potato salads! Lol. Does that make me a potato salad snob!

Oh yum! My momma made the best potato salad too. She taught me how to make it a few years before she passed away. It is different from the regular stuff we find around here. She always said it was her "bohemian" recipe. I am going to make it next weekend for my son's party. I never get insulted when someone doesn't like something I make, that just means there is more for me!

Mamaw makes hers like mashed potatoes and then adds mayo, mustard, onion, eggs, and pickles. I just can't ever get it quite right
