The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

I have no idea where to get half a dozen egg cartons....

That is the easy part. You cut a dozen egg carton in half and you have 2 half dozen egg cartons.

The best packed eggs that I have received so far were tissue wrapped and placed in a half dozen egg carton. That carton was taped shut and placed in a small bubble wrap lined box. That box was taped up and placed inside a larger box which was line with bubble wrap and insulation. The insulation was there because the eggs were shipped during an extreme cold spell and had a 72 hour heat pack taped to the bottom of the small box.

The eggs arrived completely undamaged and could start hatching as soon as this Thursday.

Good luck.

Packing in Tissue and in egg cartons did not do well in our experiments, especially if they go through Georgia. The bubble wrapped box is good but it should be double boxed. This type of packing will work if the shipment is within two days by truck. It will not work for eggs that have to go by plane.

Each egg should be wrapped up like a taco, ends open with the eggs placed in the box big end up. The space between the eggs should be filled with shredded paper or foam nuggets but not too tightly..and like above, bubble packing at the bottom, top and sides.

The space between the two boxes should be filled with foam nuggets. I have had eggs shipped this way with fork lift marks in them and the eggs were perfect and hatched well.

i agree with ron

i have had some good hatches with egg carton shipping but more bad

you should give the eggs the best chance at hatching you can

I have spent most of the day reading through this post from the beginning...only 1/3 of the way through and it's bedtime. All of this information has been awesome! I'm a complete newbie to incubating - I have my first hatch in my incubator now on day 9. I picked up BCM eggs in Alabama and drove back to Virginia then picked up BO, Red Star, and silkie eggs the next day in Virginia and set them that night. Then I saw Lavendar orp eggs I just HAD TO HAVE. They are being shipped and should arrive tomorrow. I ran out and bought another incubator (the first is very full) and have it running and ready for my shipped eggs to get here. I'm soooo excited!!

you need to join our incubators anonymous thread

I did join Incubators Anonymous the day I bought my second incubator on my lunch break instead of eating! Since these eggs are being shipped, I wanted to be sure I read up on shipping specific issues I might run into.

now i recognise your name!!

also check out the hatching 101 in my signature

it has a lot of info on shipped eggs

3 weeks ago I got 48 eggs in the mail. Only 8 of them have hatched and I am on day 22. I'm so sad. I won't be ordering anymore shipping eggs. I even have a sportsman 1502 incubator and have really good hatches from my own eggs in it.

Do you want to experiment with us?

I need to practice shipping so for the cost of shipping, I could send you some blue egg layers called UofA blues.
