The Great Egg Shipping Experiment!

Pics
Boo, my shipped eggs are arriving on the 5th of April but I may wander over to the thread if it's OK. :)

I would love to have you on that hatchathon (turkeys and tutors) https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...de-mayo-turkey-hatchathon-all-poultry-welcome but I have to warn you, that one is a wild ride. Everyone on that hatch loves to cut up and laugh (usually at each other!) I will be posting the incubation notes here, as well. I (we) will set turkeys and ducks on April 7th, then chickens or "turkey tutors" on the 14th. Can you wait that long? BTW, April 6th is my anniversary and my parents anniversary, too!

Well Happy Anniversary!!!!!!!

I recandled again tonight.. Out of 12 I discarded 1 that was either infertile or an early quitter. So Baby Girl is still sitting on 11 that look real good. I can't believe she is covering that many eggs!!! Good thing it's getting very warm here in Louisiana... Lol ... She may cover 11 eggs but I dont think she can cover 11 new chicks!!!

Don't worry about it! If hte chicks get cold, they will find a warm spot--under the wing, down into the back feathers....they will be fine.

I had the best experiment is shipping this week!

Last September I won an ebay auction for Blue Egg layers from the UofArkansas. Personal problems and winter delayed the shipment of the eggs and I had no idea whent they would be shipped. A fellow BYC Friend asked if I could incubate some Blue Egg Layer eggs for him and I said yes. An hour later I got a notice that the other Blue Egg Lyer eggs would be shipped to me.

Both shipments left Arkansas on the same day with two very different packing methods. One is a version of the Wisher1000 method and the other I will call the Tissue paper method...

Tissue paper method was in one small box. Inside the box was a foam egg carton.

This was inside the egg carton, eggs wrapped in tissue:

The front two eggs were completely broken. The tissue paper did not stop the egg goo from seeping into the other eggs so I had to wash all but the two eggs on the right.

The second method, the modified Wisher1000 method was in two boxes with shredded paper around the second box

The second box was lined with big air bubble packs. Each egg was bubble wrapped and the eggs were set into the box big end up!

All of the eggs were in perfect shape.

I have sent a message to the tissue paper packer with suggestions to use somethng like the Wisher1000 method for packing eggs.

Now I will have to watch the Tissue paper eggs because I can guarantee a bunch of them will rot during incubation.

Oh, man, Ron! I hate that! Which was which? Were the ones for you broken or the ones you were hatching for someone else? The ones in the broken batch look brown, and the ones in the secure batch look bluer than I remember the Ark Blues being. Can you show us the eggs unwrapped?

The broken eggs were for me!

I was sent 6 Blue egg layer eggs and they are blue. I was also sent Blue Wayandotte Bantam eggs, those were the brown ones.

The person that sent the nicely packed eggs offered to send me some of hers she felt so bad.

I still have not heard from the Tissue packed egg shipper.

I candles today pulled another 5. 3 were questionable and 27 were good. and I seen two moving a few saddle air cells but.most seemed to be in fairly good shape.

Good job on candling!

Do not worry about the saddle air cells. Mark them though--those sometimes get into a bad position at hatch and have a tendency to get stuck.

I candled and set the eggs. One of the Blue Wyandotte eggs had cracks all over the top. I am not bothering with it so it is not going to be incubated.

These are my eggs from the tissue packed shipment:
