The Great LG Project!

That is correct... Still air bators (ones that don't have a fan) should be at 101 degrees ON TOP of the egg. Forced air (incubators with a fan) should be at 99.5

So, I'm confused. Does this mean that when the LG supplied thermometer says 99.5 it's actually at 101? Or should I raise the heat so that the LG thermometer reads 101? Or should I put in a REAL thermometer and keep it at 101? And really - why the h*ll doesn't the LG directions TELL you that important little detail!!!

I'm following this thread with interest. I'm using a borrowed LG and so far I'm not loving it. Temps fluctuate like crazy. I'll see if I can scrounge up an old computer fan and a milk jug lid. Thanks for the tips!

So, if I've been incubating for 5 days at 99.5 instead of 101 - do my eggs have any chance of making it? I'm glad I haven't bought any expensive eggs for it. But still, it's full of my own eggs and I really want the babies.

Most of the thermometers that come with the bators are not correct. You need to verify the reading with a thermometer that you trust, like a medical thermometer.

i use 3 thermometers in my incubators the one that came with it and 2 digital thermometers i got at walmart. 99.5 is for a forced air incubators with still air i would go 101

In this eggperiment, I'm using 4 thermometers as well, three probe type, and one of the GQF Hygrometer/thermometer combos. I trust it more than the other 3 but I know that it is off as well. SADLY none of these made in china thermometers are manufactured with a high level of quality assurance.

So am i in trouble that i have been running at 99.5 since i put them in on Monday night?

Nope. You're not in trouble. At lower temps like that it just delays growth a little. they will still grow. Just bump the heat up a bit.

Awesome thanks - nervous Dad you know - well Father hen - wel lyou get the idea! LOL

LGs are not that bad. Thats all I have and I have hatched literally hunderend of chicks and ducklings in it in the past two years. I have 58 or so eggs in mine now and they are doing great...Started with 62 and they are due in about 12 days give or take a day. On christmas I hatched 5 bantam cochins eggs that I put into it, a 100% hatch.

I personally do not touch to knob at all once I have the temp set. I keep my LG elevated on a few books so that there is air circulation under and I also cover it top and bottom with a small wool blanket. I think it helps hold the heat in better. I also cover it with another small throw if it gets too chilly in my room and the temp goes down a bit. Its usually enough to bring it back up in a hurry.

This should be interesting to see.
