The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Just a couple shots of a couple of my 8 week old Mohawks. Getting pretty nice. These two are from the second bunch that I got from Paul Gingerich.

Next are a couple shots of my 16 week old Don Nelson from Dinahmoe. Some seem to be loosing their tail feathers. lol

Took this shot to show feather quality on the pullets

Lookin' good there Jim

They are right on cue in molting out their juvenile plumage and getting their first adult feathers this is right at 22- 26 wks (there abouts) depending on the strain and when the pullets look absolutely their prettiest ever right before POL, new dresses and their red, red combs look as if they just came from the beauty shop..LOL this is a good time to really see who's who for great feather qualities/colors too.

Thanks for the comment Jeff. One thing I will tell you all is that when folks say about the broad heads, most of these Nelson pullets have the really broad heads. I absolutely love these two lines of reds. I've had a lot of different chickens over the years and always had them as a kid at home but I've never had any that I like as well as these two lines. I can honestly see now why Bob does all the bragging on these lines. Not only color and conformation of these but the dispositions are so amazing. Got to really watch when I go into their coops or runs. They are constantly under foot. lol I am so grateful to dinahmoe, Paul Gingerich, NYREDS for letting me acquire these chicks/eggs. I really do appreciate and thank all you folks that put all the helpful information about the RIR's to help us that have just gotten into the older lines. Don't really know how many I will have for breeding because I'm in no hurry to cull any of them. I don't mind feeding all of them over winter if I have to because I don't want to discard any that might turn out to be that special one. lol
I am supposed to be getting a couple cock birds from Matt1616 (Florida blood) to put with my Illinois birds. Will be pretty well set for quite a long while then.
Right now I have 19 Don Nelson and 24 Mohawks.
Thanks
Jim

These are the Ricky Bates line and were hatched mid January. I bought them from Fogelly here in Arkansas. They have not started laying yet but soon. I think they are lovely and would love your opinion. Please pardon the white spots on the one pic. The sun was shining pretty brightly as it reached 111 degrees in Little Rock. Had to put the tarp back up after taking the photos. They like me when I bring in meal worms, the camera not so much....

I can't seem to load the pics so here is the link. Sorry

And this is two trios of the crossed Mohawks that came from Matt1616...

Not great pics and they are all still so young..... but give me a couple more months with them and I'll get a bunch of pics to post!!!!

Some pretty nice looking reds. It seems that there will be a few more around next year if the price of feed don't go through the roof. I'm planning on raising quite a few of the Mohawk and Don Nelson lines over this winter/spring if I continue with the good luck of raising these young ones. I absolutely love these two lines. Working on a new 8 X 10 coop for the Mohawks.
