The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

also who do I get in touch with now to get on a list or something to reserve birds if I cant get them in delaware
If you go to my site, look at the owners/breeders page and you will see some of the folks that have them. Not to many are on there but there are a few.

I can't promise you anything right now but if you don't get any results, get in touch with me later down the road and if available I will do my best to help you. I only have 3 RC hens right now at laying age and a couple have already asked for babies so I don't know how much I can do. I am hatching right now trying to build up my little frock of RC's; lol

Pics of my bunch

And I do have a few hatchery reds on here with the rooster. The two roosters are NYreds stock, the young chicks are JimmyJays stock, all Nelson line.
Monnie, I had 3 boys starting out and 8 girls starting out this year. The one boy got to bossy with the other two so I put him in a pen by himself. I sold one of the other two boys and the one that is the daddy of your chicks is built almost like your NYREDS boys. He was a little shorter in height but really broad across the back all the way to the oil gland and has a massive chest on him. Your young ones look pretty nice. I have a few close to their age. I didn't raise many of them this year for myself. I lost a couple of my big girls this summer to the heat. I wish you all the best of luck with your Nelson line birds and hoping they turn out to be just super duper examples of the line.. The girls should get to be pretty big hens.

What a great shot. Look at the contrast of the male and the females. Lurkers look at the difference in color of the females in orange feathers which is the old fashion feed store production layers. Great layers by the way and then the old fashion Original Real McCoy Rhode Island Red from the 1930s. This is a good male with great style. Nice green tail. For you Don Nelson fans this is his blood line.

Thanks for the post and the pictures. Also glad you got some nice Reds in Mississippi. By the way my wife said I can go to the first show in Jackson this fall. Hope to see all of you from that region there. bob

Quote: I read in the APA news that Mississippi now has a poultry club. I did join them on Facebook also. So anyone that is interested their website is www.mspoultryshowclub.org.. Glad to see Mississippi folks getting some interest in starting a club. Hopefully will get to see some heritage breeds being shown soon.

I've been careful this summer it has been a torcher, no rain to speak of in the top part of the state, I take milk jugs and freeze water in them (without the tops) and flip them over in their water bucket and they just stand around the bucket sipping water, and the ice melts out of the jugs and keeps their water buckets full plus it is cool water, has seemed to keep them going so far. Says it is going to be 100 by Saturday so summer is not giving up yet. Will have to go to the freezer and check my stash of jugs and be sure I have plenty, I do this for my Anatolian Shepherds too.

What size(s) numbered bandettes do most of you use on your HRIR? Different size for roos than hens?
I use #11 for the girls and #12 for the boys. You have to wait a little longer to band them but they fit when they are grown. I was having a problem with a size smaller when they got full grown. You may want to get a few #10 just in case you have a few smaller ones.

So I reckon this is the end of the road for me here. My HRIR pullet that was doing bad passed away yesterday. So I guess this is where I say Goodbye. :(
