The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Were you able to get some input on your RIRs at the show? Lake City will be the first show I go to, not showing, just spectator. I am hoping to gain a wealth of info and hopefully get a chance to talk to some of the breeders for tips. I think seeing quality birds in person rather then just in pics will help me a lot with my breeding. Every little bit of info helps.

I tried to talk to some judges after the show and they said they would get back to me but never did.
I got my first heritage large fowl standard bred ..sop..rhode island red ...egg today.....whoo hoo....as was just discussed she was much older than the hatchery production reds....at 8 months...as they started at 5 1/2 months...however her egg was not their typical pullet egg it was large 1 7/8 oz...now if the others will hurry up ..let the hatching begin...:)
My HRIR's started laying later than my standard RIR's and their eggs were larger than regular pullet eggs too. They usually run lg and xlg but I have had some jumbos. I weigh all of my eggs.

Can you explain what you mean by HRIR and standard RIR? I've never seen anyone use HRIR before.

Thank You.

That was my guess too, but I wouldn't call a hatchery bird a standard. I'd call it a hatchery or production, as they certainly do not meet or attempt to meet SOP.
I agree but I took it as Standard, run of the mill but like I said it was just a guess.

No biggie, it's all good!!!!

Hey yeah me too Ronnie, I got to see one of the RIR girls(8mo) going on the nest and that afternoon there it was, a decent nice size egg too, got to say they sure are doing better than my BRs are. I think Fred got it right the other day when he told someone over on the Rock thread they(BRs) would start up on their birthday,(12mo/1yr) LOL

Right now, on the Wyandotte thread, people have been discussing fertilization issues with cocks and cockerels in Wyandottes caused by the rose comb. I was wondering if anyone has found any issues similar to this in rose comb RIR's?

I don't have RC RIR's but do have RC RIW's. The only fertility issues are, the birds have been molting recently and I have found that the fertility goes down when the birds are molting.
