The Heritage Rhode Island Red Site

Well, this is the last week to have my breeding pens going. It has been a good season, and I have some good looking birds growing out.
It is very gratifying to have helped 15+ people get started with RIR. Some went with chicks some with hatching eggs.
Shipped eggs average 50% or better with only one failed hatch(That persons second hatch was successful)

I hope everyone enjoys their birds and look forward to seeing your progress.

...And some went with both chicks and eggs...

Thanks again Ron for giving people around the country a chance to raise, preserve, and just plain enjoy your strain. Going out to the barn yard is a joy every day for me.

They sure are looking good. I love the RC. I can't wait until mine are old enough to breed so I can get a good flock of them.

Just wanted to rub it in a little. lol Just kidding My RC (3 pullets, 2 cockerels Underwood line) were 6 months 5/10 and got my first egg 5/11-12. Almost every day I'd get 1 or 2 eggs from them. Yesterday I got 3 eggs from the 3 girls and my SC's are now laying also. I have 7 SC (1 cockerel and 6 pullets). These are some very nice birds and I feel so proud to have them. I hatched these from eggs from Jim Heinz. The ones I have straight from Gary are exactly 3 months younger.

Ron, thanks for being such a nice man to share your eggs with us. My 8 little 5 week olds are doing well--two definate cockerels and maybe one more. They are just the sweetest birds and so healthy.

LOL, actually two of mine are extremely red in the face and the other two are getting there. I expect eggs any day now from them. My laying flock (mixed breed hatchery stock) has decided to go broody. I guess it is their last ditch effort to avoid freezer camp. I have 4 out of 7 that are broody and 2 of the remaining 3 are hiding their eggs now. I am thinking of keeping them now to hatch out Reds for me next year.

Ah Ha, so their master plan worked! LOL

Hey there Penny, Good to know this. The eggs are on the small side but hey, I don't really care, it is just so good to know that they are going to lay. lol AND the color is more brown. So many of these HRIR birds are laying an almost white egg. Someone sure has messed them up over the years.

Pictures of Ron's Birds. I think 2 females and 2 roos with 1 I'm not sure on.

The first 4. I'm thinking 1 girl maybe 2 in this picture.

Chick #5, I'm thinking girl.

The one in the top right is the one I'm not sure on. I was thinking roo but its comb is shorter than the other 2 I think are roos.

This one is a girl I think and slightly smaller than the rest. We lovingly call it runty. It is a favorite of the children, mainly because they can tell it apart from the others.

Sorry this one is slightly blurry. This is the best I could get of the one I really would like guesses on the gender. Sometimes I think I'm seeing things but maybe this chick has a slightly different look to its face. Almost like it is upset or angry at the world.

All of these chicks are very dark and fun to watch. They are about 8 weeks old in these pictures.

I'd bet the one in the last photo is a boy. Look at the build, tail and the wattles. lol Sure will surprise me if HE isn't. lol

Also, I see something in the pictures that you better fix pretty quickly. I see the points of the screws sticking out of the wood. My reason for saying this is I just had a hen get hurt really bad a week or so ago on a nail that was sticking out like that on a roost pole. Never had it happen before but I guess there is a first time for everything. Better to be safe then sorry.
Please don't think that I'm picking on you. I was really sick when I saw the slice in my Underwood pullets neck. Then the others picked at it and I never thought that she would make it. If it would have been a hatchery bird I would have offed her head but she is absolutely gorgeous and I put some salve on it, let her run by herself and she is healing up fine. Will be a few weeks before she can go in with the others but at least I know now to always check for these things.
