About the same age. I have seen some strange colors popping up in the Orpington imports. Like the Lavender Cuckoo above. Or gold bleeding through on the hackles on the chocs, or gold hackles of the splash and blues (and some barring in the tail feathers etc). I spoke with some one over in the UK and the orps colors were crossed for various project colors and apparently first generation culls (when the colors are the same as one of the parents) when sold was not disclosed that they were carrying a different color gene. (I'm sorry but I am not at liberty to say who)

Unfortunately there is no way of knowing what is back there until the second generation when different colors will begin to show up. Some times it is kind of neat but some times it is annoying when you have a beautiful bird and the color is all wrong........

There is a perfect example of this on one of the sale sites here in the USA. A breeder is selling black orps but the sire (rooster) is a split chocolate, visibly black. 50% of the males he produces will carry the chocolate gene and be visibly black being sold as black, but when bred to a blue or splash will produce blues with coppering (choc) in the hackles, not good when you think you have a genetically black roo. If the genetics are not disclosed it is really going to mess up some lines for unknowing breeders.

All I can say to anyone selling birds is PLEASE, PLEASE disclose what is behind your birds if you are aware. Even if you decided to try to breed out of a color issue (ie gold in the hackles) it takes generations to do. It is almost worth starting all over.

I am sorry about your chocs TKay, but on the brighter side, a good start to Chocolate Cuckoo??

And they are pretty!

I have a question......This cockerel is a UK Chocolate. However, he is showing some barring on his feathers. Has anyone else had their chocolates feather like this? Or anyone have an opinion on whats going on? Thanks!

Thanks for the info Nellie! I kinda figured that was the case. This cockerel came from a VERY well known breeder. I'm not upset at all. I'm gonna use him as a possible choc cuckoo project. Never know!!!

BTW your lavender cuckoo is gorgeous!!!
