Renie, you could create your own line of Gold Laced by breeding him to your Blue or Black hens...
The intial cross (GL X BBS) would yeild chicks that were "incompletely laced", meaning their lacing wouldn't be perfect and the gold color would not be as visible. These chicks would then have all the genetic material you would need to create more Gold Laced.
Breed the offspring together or back to their father to correct color and lacing. Your BBS birds carry the pattern gene which is what creates such nice lacing in our imported Blues. (something most American BBS Orps lack) That gene will naturally work with the pattern/lacing genes in the GL so all you'll have to work on is breeding the gold color back into the line.
Your type would most likely be a lot better than most of the Gold Laced out there too because most of the BBS birds have much better shape/type than any of the other imported colors.
You would also get some "hybrid vigor" by crossing the two colors, their offspring will most likely lay better and thrive more overall.
Plus it will probably save you some money! Always a good thing in my book!
Just my thoughts... =)
I want to do this with bantams, I'm going to use a GL Wyn, what about the leg color? If you use black, won't the leg color be dark?Renie, you could create your own line of Gold Laced by breeding him to your Blue or Black hens...
