The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

A black out of a Blue is still genetically just black. A blue is not going to pop up if you breed Black to black not matter if he comes from blue and you will not get blue in your feathering. It will not give you poor black color unless genetically you already have poor or dull black coloring.
If your birds have some other dilute mixed in / cuckoo, brown, buff, it might throw off your coloring.

So If you want blacks from me ever just know if I have a black hatch from a blue that is great color and type then I have put them in my black pen.

Thank you Bama <hugs> Cuz that is what I have been doing.

Thank you :)

But the question remains.... Are the black derived down from breeding Blues considered pure Black???
NO. blacks from BBS matings are not true blacks as they probably carry silver, not gold/red.

Just check out the Silkie threads Renie. They are in trouble due to so many people breeding volumes of BBS at the expense of the blacks. It is very noticable on a Silkie when it has blue under fluff. The red gene is being bred out of Orps in BBS. It's the gold/ red gene that gives you a true black ...a disaster when it shows up as leakage in BBS, but necessary in true black. Many top producing Silkie cock birds show a glint of red in the hackle , but their female offspring are true black.

You can't fix it by breeding black to black in your own lines?
Breeding black, carrying blue to the same will give you better blacks than from a BBS mating, but they will still lack the intense black undercolor, and green sheen of a black carrying gold/red. Go ahead and look at some black OE Game bantams, or black Rosecombs. You'll see the difference in under color , and in the intensity of top color , particularly on the edges of the top feathering.

Yes I had heard about the silkie folks having problems with finding true blacks within the breed... Learned that from Vivi. I just figure too a lot has to do with what was used to derive at certain breeds made the difference.... Cook used several different breeds when he worked on the Orpington. Soo I think that has to be considered. I am glad we are all having this discussion. ")

Ok Well just how in the world do you get a TRUE black???? Do we have to go back to the Australorp ??
