The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Renie'sPeeps :

This is a question I have been pondering... HOW old is too old for a Roo to be used as breeder effectively?

I have been told, a cock is most active in his first three years then his drives and urges slow down dramatically to a few select few hens. Some prefer to use only older cocks for the reason of trying to get inheritly longer lived sex drives. So that way you don't have to feed your cock Viagra. lolol

I just wanted to see what you guy's tought about my Orp, I wanted to show a bird but then I run into her and decided to give her a try, but before I do I want to get your opinions, especially if you've shown before, is she even worth the try? Thanks for lookin

Nava you need to take picture with a profile for a better view of type. I don't know if it is the camera making her look dark but she might be bit dark for showing if you are showing in a APA sanctioned show. I carried two pullets last fall to Ohio National, one dark blue and one a lighter shade. Both had great lacing and were large. The darker blue was larger. She didn't even get anything but the lighter one won best variety. See if you can get a side shot with her standing up.

I want to ask a question about eye color. It is my understanding that the buffs are allowed to have a lighter eye than the BBS. Do the Blues need to be bred back to a black to maintain pigment? Will the blues continually bred back to Splashes and other Blues run the risk of loosing eye pigment?

Ok I know Bama thinks my birds are spoiled.. umm maybe they are lol... but I draw the line at heated nest boxes... hahaha I found a blue hen trying to sit on a half submerged egg in the heated water bowl... If that don't beat all.. ugg

Not sure about maintaining the eye color. But I did hear that to maintain the good blue feather color with good lacing you need to maintain the blue to black matings. And that the blue to splash breedings won't give as good a blue. How true is that for those who know?? I have kept a splash cockerell in hope to maintain a blue/splash line but I have recently decided his comb is going to be "eh". So I hate to keep him if he has 2 marks against him. These are American orps but since it was a color question I asked here!

Joy stay tuned for some beautimous lacing on my girl!!

I have given alot of thought about the value of a splash roo... and I have come to the conclusion that you don't have to have one.. Just breeding 2 blues will give you splash sooner or later
