I got a question about washing orpingtons.   I got one that has some wet poop stuck on her butt.  I saw something about dipping them in a 5 gallon of soapy water.  Problem is the hen is too big to fit in a 5 gallon.  So, how do you guys wash a dirty butt? 

Wal-Mart has big 18 gallon plastic barrells with rope handles that could work really good for washing Orpingtons.

Hey guys, my chicks are about 3.5 weeks old now and some of them have really started sparing. No blood yet, just wondering how long I can leave the males in together safely before new digs need to be had. Will be moving them out into a much larger enclosure this weekend so hopefully the extra room and sunshine will help their moods. I guess these could be hens vying for dominance over each other. Really don't know what to expect as I have never had straight run or EOs before. How long have you all been able to keep your EOs together until weeding out the ones you want to keep?

kiniska, at this point its all play but after a couple months if they are really going at it they need to be separated..I use baffles or a line of stomp fence in a large pen so they are not continually in each others face..they can run around that fence and are kept busy ...Given pleanty of room there is usually little problem until they get older..I have 2 roosters that were raised together at 2 years old they are still together..spring they get a little testy only to each other..rest of the year no problems..If you want to keep your pullets nice , when the boys start to get busy around them, then you need to separate them..I keep a line rooster huts the batchelor pads..each has cliamte control..so they are comforatable and have a run of thier own..


somone else may be able to give timelines ect. and good advise that will be very helpful...but to me they are like people, some are easy, some are stinkers..I just act accordingly..

A newly rehabed baby Aframe..we are re-wiring the three Aframes with weasle proof wire..Im going to put shingles on the hut after tar paper..

I use the big wal mart totes also..I have one big orp that really needs a bath..he has the whole barn floor tto sleep on with fluffy sawdust., for reasons only he knows, he sleeps right under the blk orp hen and got pooped upon..I put a box in the way but he climbed in it...tried to take it off..but it drys into stalagtites..he needs to soak..I need to make different arrangements for him or block him from sleeping right under her with something...the box didnt work.....

I tried the sand. I really wish I could use it. It is so damp and cold here that it stays wet and cold. I loved it in July and August. It dried and was so nice to work with. I use it in my small brooder in my house. I use DL in my outside coops.

I gave my English a bath to remove the winter dirty skirts. They stayed beautiful for a whole day.

Wekivabird, Deek, and I have covered runs. The sand stays dry, except in the summer, when I wet it down after picking up.

Oh Lynne ! We can put your boy, Hungry, and Monty in a row ! I am so thrilled with these boys. Got to give Monty a hug for stamping his get so beautifully. How the girls have grown too. Thank you for raising them so well !

In person Vickie, that cockeral is postcard pretty.. they all are... but he is a showman..knows hes handsom ...Its all your and Marcs doing.. I just did a little poultry husbandry ......I was too lazy to bend down and take a pic.. Im sure no photographer..but its hard to take a bad pic of him..

They need to make a twirl a squirril poultry feeder..I was actually out there because the squirrls emptied the feed bowl in a few minutes
