The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Nellie, only you would have the guts to post this guy ! Thank you! This is in line of what we see in dilute dogs. Very fine undercoat , but sparse top coat...ie; main feathers in chickens. Look not only at the tail, but at the wings. What would happen if you crossed him with some of your Lavender Cuckoos ? Because of the barring thery carry, they have not lost the main ( Hard ) feathers. Maybe an infusion of that blood would break up this pattern without ruining the color.

I got a giggle out of that, and thank you for the vote of confidence

. But for now he will be in the Bachelor Pad. I have some nice lavenders that I thought I would work with for now. When I run out of other projects(and gain a few more breeding pens.....) I might come back to him. Right now he is a happy camper with the other Bachelors in waiting

I had some pics of the lav and split cuckoos here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/773547/swedish-flower-hen-and-lavender-ameraucana-chicks-se-tn And you can see my roo on the happymtnfarm site while its still up. They are Ameraucana, not Orps.

But I think since you have the birds to do it, you should try a generation of solid lav roo over cuckoo hens. Grow out your solid female chicks and compare them to the ones form solid parents. I am betting you will have improvement. The only drawback is a bunch of single factor cockerels, but I don't think you'd have a problem rehoming them.

I took a few photos this evening. Louie is turning 7 months old June 1. I love this boy. I have a slighty younger one with good color but not as rotund. This boy is a wide load front to back. I will use him for breeding. Love his tail. Hoping his comb doesn't get to big and hoping he gets a bit more height on him but I will still use him on a big hen if he doesn't get as tall as I want.

Very nice bunch you have there.

Yes, that might work. Or an exceptional black rooster, wouldn't that work? Would the barring crop up later if they do not visibly have barring, I mean can they be split for barring or do they actually have to show it to have it?
