The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Hi everyone! I am the proud new owner of some jubilee orpington chicks from the Greenfire Farm line. Who else has jubilees?

I also have some jubilee chicks from Greenfire, along with partridge, red & white chicks I got from them a few weeks back.

Well it ain't been a good day here as I lost my oldest & best black hen today, She had come out of her saddle some how so I caught her & she was fine, she had been laying every day her head was chery red, feathers nice & shiny & getting around great so I put her on my knee as all ways & started to put the saddle strap around one wing & she through her head back took a big breath of air & that was it she died for no apparent reason at all, anyone ever noticed its always the best one you have that does this ?

Roger that is so sad! I am so sorry to hear that.
Ya just never know what is gong on inside those fluffy bodies. I told my husband I would like to start doing my own necropsis on those sudden death cases. I have a really nice microscope and I worked for a vet for many years, I just have to lean what the inside organs are supposed to look like when they are healthy...............

Again I am really sorry.

awww I am so very sorry to hear that. She may have already been stressed over the saddle situation... Might have gotten hung up somewhere and managed to free herself.... then picking her up was just more excitement than she could handle. Heat might have been a factor too. Your heart was in the right place... so it certainly wasn't your fault by no means.

I think.. that with the summer upon us.. that it would be a good idea to back off of the rich high energy foods and add more vegetation to complete their daily in take. I think the veggies would help keep them hydrated better than the grain too. I let mine get heavy during the winter to help them keep warm ") but the hot weather is a whole different ball game.
