I made a little discovery that I thought I would share, especially with all the wet weather and mosquitoes we are dealing with on the East Coast.

Bounce dryer sheets have been used by people for years to keep mosquitoes off. Despite fans, I noticed a few of those nasties flying about in my greenhouse where I have my baby brooder. The mosquitoes are still attracted by the light for the babies at night. I hung Bounce dryer sheets all around the sleeping area just to see if it would work. It DOES work. No more mosquitoes flying about, and the threat of pox much lessened for those babies, who are really not old enough to deal with it. Today the sheets go up in the sleeping coops for every body.

Ok, I will join those that have recently admitted to “lurking” on this thread. I have been on here for a while reading and learning as much as I can from this group. I have posted a few times but really do a lot of reading. Boy, lots of knowledge here. Also thanks to those that I have contacted privately and just know I really appreciate your advice. Honestly, I have also been a little nervous to post on this thread.

My name is Debbie and I live in Southwest Arkansas. I use the name Morgan’s Manor because Morgan is my 6 year old daughter. I owe all the credit to her since she was the one that finally convinced her dad to let us have chickens. It all started with 4 chicks that she purchased on Easter of 2012 with her own money. Shortly after, I discovered the English Orpingtons and immediately fell in love with these big fluffy birds. Now I am totally addicted.

We named our first coop – Morgan’s Coop and of course we out grew it quickly so the next larger one became Morgan’s Manor. Now I am in the progress of building out Morgan’s Mansion. (chicken math!)

Here is just a couple of pictures of my birds.
Sorry I am like a proud mama can't just show you one picture of the kids.

I started this last summer and it does discourage the mosquitoes, but with the humidity here in FL, I have to change the sheets out every other day for it have some impact. I also spray the coops and the area around the brooders with ACV in a garden pump sprayer, which help with mosquitoes and flies as well. Thanks for the reminder, Dragonlady!

And on a similar note, has anyone had issues with vaccinating for Fowl Pox?

Great idea - actually I never thought about using them in the coop. I have been using them in my pockets for a while when I am out in the yard and it seems to help. I will put some out this afternoon.
