The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Im in love with my splash roo. He's handsome, Big, perfect shape, face, fluffiness, temperament, etc. but he has a few brown "splashes" and some yellow, which think the yellow is mostly from the sun and dirt. I hear that brown is a "no no" when breeding. I just got some exhibition quality black orp hens. Will his "flawed" color be bred out easily? If I get a blue hen and cross him with her, will the splash chicks have brown? Is it a bad idea?
i think splash orpingtons tend to get sort of sunburnt feathers if they are in direct sunlite
i saw somewhere that they sould be kept in a semi shaded areas
we are planning on adding a bug blue tarp over our britts outside run

Blarneyeggs I went to a forum to ask a friend who has gotten the jubilees accepted again about the info on the Partrdge and my computer shut down and went completely crazy and had to go through a repair and I was praying it would work and it did. I am now hesitant to go back and try again but I have other ways to contact so I will let you know when I get a answer.

Okay, I just ask Sandra Hiildreth in the UK and she said nothing has been written. She says the feet and shanks should be the same as buff. I also just looked a picture of a fabulous Partridge cock from a man in Europe that raises them and I am friends on FB and his boy has white shanks and feet. The eyes were gold

This is such great info, thanks. I'm glad you added that about eye color. The Partridge Brahma, Cochin, Rock, ect.. in APA Standard call for reddish bay eyes, all my partridge orps have that yellowish color eye, lets hope they turn gold!

I can't get over how much these guys are eating! I have them on 'pullet grower' now from a local mill where I pick up my hog feed. It's 18% protein -the highest this particular mill offers. I usually get my chicken feed from a different place that offers 20% grower, but is pretty far. The hogs get processed in August. After that I would be willing to switch back to the 20%, but had a LF Langshan breeder tell me too high protein on these larger breeds that take longer to mature can be a very bad thing. Said she blew out the legs on more than one Langshan before switching to a lower protein. What do you all think?

Red gold may be bay. I am just describing what I see. One the feed I like to switch back and forth. I have mine on 21% right now. I will keep them on it till probably next week and switch back to 18 for a few weeks and then back. I have used game bird grower for a week at the time but no longer than that because it is 28 %. I have never had problems from feeding it to them but like I said I go back and forth. I haven't noticed them eating less even thought he protein is higher and the cost too.

Gardengirl: you hit the nail on the head! I have been trying to be patient with a group I am growing out to see if I'll have something show worthy for the fall. They have been in the gangly awkward stage for so long. It surprised me today when I went out to check everyone before tuning in for the evening - they have exploded! this group is 5 months old and I put a 5 gallon bucket in for reference. Sorry for loading so many pictures. They've just gotten so big and wide. This group is all out my biggest black hen Chelsea, who I showed last fall and the early part of this year, and my biggest black rooster. i think his son will be bigger than he is and if the pullets keep growing any, they will surpass her as well. Hopefully one of these will make to show this fall. They are American and English lines.
Beautiful Group of Blacks!!! Thanks for sharing pictures.

Thanks for everyone's comments and complements. I see the pics everyone uploads of stunning orps in every color under the rainbow and forget sometimes to appreciate what I have.

Took my English Orp bantams to my friend tonight who is a judge. She did not like them because they aren't in the standard. She asked me why I got them. I told her I liked a challenge. I have 10 to choose from. I'm planning on keeping 2 trios. At what age can I start to make selections on type? These guys seem very slow growing compared to other breeds I've raised.

Also, what in the status of them being accepted into the standard? Is there anybody working on that?
