The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

We have two dogs one yorkie and a border collie. The yorkie couldn't do anything if he wanted to. So far the border collie keeps everything ran off (knock on wood) except once when it was raining so hard I decided to put him in the garage. That night the fence blew down and something killed some chickens. The dogs don't even acknowledge that the chickens are around unless the chickens are trying to eat their food and they snaps at them. Pretty lucky. It was funny one cold day I was outside working and the big dog came out of the dog house, then the little, and a chicken came out last. They were all in there huddled up.
I had a blue healer that was great with the chickens. I started at six weeks taking her in the pen to feed them. The only thing she ever did was help herd them. She was great and I was sad when we gave her away.

We didn't get our Lab until he was 8 months old... He wouldn't hurt the tinyest of chick but if you leave a dish of chick starter on the ground.. HE will eat that. lol The only thing I ever did was hold a chick in my hand ... show it to him.. and told him basically not to bother them. He does nose them sometimes then walks away. We just got lucky was all ") My pugs don't bother the big birds but I wouldn't put them to the test with a small one..... they like to eat everything. lol

My english bred Lab has been around poultry since 8 weeks of age...all he's ever been interested in is THEIR FOOD & POOP

Hence, I have had to always feed the 'light' version dog food to keep his girth at least even with his shoulders and hips.

We lost our Lab last year at the age of 11, although he wanted to eat our first chickens (4yrs ago) he quickly learned to watch over them and would herd them in in the evening. I then got 2 Aussie mix pups and can't trust them one bit. Everyone is fair game to them, I've lost a few chicks and juvies :( Needless to say I miss my Lab, he was such a good boy for accepting the chickens as family.

Oh and yes, the poop. I swear he would follow them around like a vaccum cleaner. Silly dog!

I've been watching this pullet since the wing feathers started coming in. Thought it was one of those new fangled "blue" splash chicks everyone was talking about a couple of weeks ago. Just not sure, but what I am sure of is that I have no cuckoo or anything even remotely resembling cuckoo that would have produced this (I know exactly who this chick was hatched from and it's a first time trial/fertility test for the blue roo and a youngish splash hen)

Ideas anyone? Definitely going to let her hang around to see what happens...

Thank you for all that have been posting about dogs. Even though this is not supposed to be a thread about dogs. It has convinced me even more that it's all in the individual and not the breed. Should I get one that will kill chickens, it will be disposed of. In the meantime, I dont' require one that will kill a bear, only one that will discourage smaller things and warn me should it be too big to handle.

God knows no bears are here. They have more sense than to live here. But coyotes, well, that is a possibility. And I have seen evidence of just about everything else around, even a deer footprint today. Though I know they are not predators unless I'm talking garden, and yes I do plan to have a large one, and just where the deer footprints were.

No idea here- but updates would be cool. It is a neet looking chick!

Looks Splash to me.
Oh, I have no doubt it's splash. The only other genetic option is blue, which is unlikely, it's just I've never seen striping like this. Just wondering if anyone has ever seen this before. Most of my splashes are very white with literal "splashes" of blue feathers. I've hatched out two chicks that are light bluish with laced splashing and now this. Haven't hatched a ton of chicks over the years, so just bouncing the pic around out of curiosity. Their seems to be some patterning to the coloration...
