The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Jobele, she's nice and round!

Thanks everyone, I now have quite an arsenal of eye ointments. During my phone calls and investigations, I came across a new Vet in town that will see my chickens!!! Even though I now have a cabinet full of eye stuff, I'm taking the pullet there tomorrow, just to build a good repoire with her. You have to work hard at getting Drs to do what you want!

Below isn't a chicken picture. I hope no one turns me in. This cloud formation was photographed in West Palm. I hope I don't offend anyone. She just makes me smile.
This photograph might have been altered, but none the less, she's beautiful. I don't know if you can see the flutter of her wings on your screen.
That is truly beautiful !

Dee , there have been strange and wonderful clouds like that all around the world..signs in the heavans..there was a christ on a cross filmed by 12 people in ukraine ,never seen anything like it...amazing!!..lots of them on utube..the face in clouds looks like the lord coming down to have a look around..beautiful,,, weather channel did a story on all of these strange clouds and events and strange weather also.. ...maybe that is why some act out so..they know something is coming ...

Up helping Matt and kids bath chickens this afternoon...

Can someone explain to me the difference between Isabel and Lavender color? I dont want to start any fights LOL but the Isabel looks to be just a lavender with tan/gold leakage on the hackle, saddle, and shoulder feathers??  do they breed the same as lavenders? Black x Isabel = Black Isabel Splits?

I understood it as a porcelain, like the D'Uccle. I could be wrong, clarification would be greatly appreciated.

I cracked the egg last night and it was a double yolker...both yolks were fertile

we have had this problem several times before it is usually caused by getting dirt in their eye or when they are free raging getting poked in the eye by a stick or even a blade of grass...first I would flush the eye with either water (filtered water would be best it just burns less) or an eye wash solution (Vetericyn All Animal Eye Wash is a good one) and just make sure there is no dirt or anything sticking to the inner eyelids...the last time i had to deal with an eye infection she had one little hair of a feather in her eye and I could never figure out why the eye ointment was not working..so one day I got her down and looked at her eye REALLY well first of all since she had had this infection for over a week she had a build up of infection almost behind her eye so I first had to push and wiggle that out then once I got it out I noticed that she had a piece of a feather on the inside of her eyelid so I got that out too and put some more antibiotic eye ointment in her eye and she got all better with in 2 days!

So I would recommend to first wash the eye really well look closely for any debris and or scratches to the eye. We went to our local cat and dog Vet and got some Neo Poly Bac they use that for cats and dogs and let me tell you it works wonders for chickens too!! and it only takes just a little dot for there little eyes. I put it in her eyes 2 x per day morning and night but if the infection gets or is severe I would do it 3-4 x per day.

Neo Poly Bac Is an ointment used specifically for eye infections.
Just a word of advice: if you do get Neo Poly Bac from your vet (I get mine from an Equine vet that treats my horses for about $10) make sure it does not have HC in the name (Hydrocortisone) as it could cause permanent damage to the eye if the infection is caused by a scratch to the surface of the eye. We had a boarder once whose horse kept having a weepy eye. She used the Neo Poly Bac HC since she had it on hand for about 4 days before she called the vet out. Needless to say, the horse ended up blind in that eye due to the steroids in the ointment. There is a staining kit which I keep on hand for my horse who gets allergies in the summer. Before I start with the ointment, I stain her eye to make sure it's not a scratch causing the weepy eye. I have used the Neo Poly Bac for the chickens as well with great results. Also, there is a product called Dr. Pigeon's one eye one drop which is suppose to be for one eye colds, but I used it on the debris filled eye of a little rooster that just about buried himself in the sand and I put a few drops in. It flushed out everything right away and the little guy was fine the next day.

Yeah we used the same ointment on the chicks that we got from the vet for our dog when she scratched her eye and he told us that day to be sure not to use anything with HC in it.

Anyone seen the Isabel cuckoo orp pair on rare breeds? They're so pretty! Wonder how much they'll go for?

Thanks for the compliments, those are my pride and joy :)

I call my birds Isabel Cuckoo but genetically they are Isabel Partridge Cuckoo Orpingtons. (Lavender Crele) I shortened the name a bit :)
This is what most people call them in England.

As far as breeding to blacks, I am not entirely sure and a genetics guru might need to chime in on this one. I would assume you are correct though about the splits unless someone else chimes in who is better at genetics than I am.

TheNuttyChick: Isabel and Porcelain are two different colors. Porcelain is Isabel with the mottling gene.
