The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I've used triple antibiotic ointment in eyes (of everything including myself a couple of times) for years. It clears up eye infections really quick. Just don't use the one with pain relief. It does say not to put it in eyes right the tube though. I am feeling really redneck about this reply...

I cracked the egg last night and it was a double yolker...both yolks were fertile

we have had this problem several times before it is usually caused by getting dirt in their eye or when they are free raging getting poked in the eye by a stick or even a blade of grass...first I would flush the eye with either water (filtered water would be best it just burns less) or an eye wash solution (Vetericyn All Animal Eye Wash is a good one) and just make sure there is no dirt or anything sticking to the inner eyelids...the last time i had to deal with an eye infection she had one little hair on a feather in her eye and I could never figure out why the eye ointment was not working..so one day I got her down and looked at her eye REALLY well first of all since she had had this infection for over a week she had a build up of infection almost behind her eye so I first had to push and wiggle that out then once I got it out I noticed that she had a piece of a feather on the inside of her eyelid so I got that out too and put some more antibiotic eye ointment in her eye and she got all better with in 2 days!

So I would recommend to first wash the eye really well look closely for any debris and or scratches to the eye. We went to our local cat and dog Vet and got some NeoPolyBack they use that for cats and dogs and let me tell you it works wonders for chickens too!! and it only takes just a little dot for there little eyes. I put it in her eyes 2 x per day morning and night but if the infection gets or is severe I would do it 3-4 x per day.

Oh goodness, I hope I don't have to dig in her eye. Will definitely wash it out. I'll call the Vet, but they sure don't want to treat my chickens. I think she (the Vet) thinks her skills are not worthy of my birds.

haha Well chicken folks all use the wormers off-label and some other stuff, no need to think we should be different about the ointment!

I would call it being resourceful.

I have used BACITRACIN for all eye infections an injury's to prevent infections. From scratches to any eye injury or infections for all animals and humans. All local pharmacy's carry it.

Triple antibiotic? An over the counter Neosporin or something of the sort? Eyes just scare me to death.

Blarneyeggs, I asked such a stupid question because my biggest chicks don't always turn out to be my biggest adults. Sometimes, but not often. The alpha always turns out to be the biggest since he doesn't let the others eat as much. And the alpha isn't always the biggest when they're chicks. (The 'ole nature vs nurture)

Dee I use teramycin < sp?

Missed this post. Where does one buy the ointment? "Pricey" stopped being a concern for me a long time ago. My children won't get anything from me. My chickens are getting it all.:D
Opthamalic ointment helps with injuries to the eye.  It's pricey, but works well.

I found it at my local TSC, it's by Veteracin(spelling?)
