You could always replace your male with a Black or Blue roo, too.

Your first gen would only produce Black or Blue offspring, with the males being split to Choc.

Breed one of these males back to his Chocolate mother and you'd be well on your way to hatching another visibly Chocolate rooster.

You'd probably also be improving type by outcrossing to a nice BBS line.
The outcross sounds pretty amazing. What would be the outcome?
 
I posted this same question in the chocolate orpington thread, but decided to post here as well since so many experienced breeders participate in this thread. I have a beautiful LF English 8 month old chocolate pullet. Unfortunately, lost my LF chocolate roos. I have found a couple for sale, but the photos show what appears to me to be red leakage. Ideally, I would avoid these. I see two options: 1) buy chicks and cross my fingers I get a nice roo (and it kills me she would go to waste while I wait) or 2) buy a roo with leakage and after hatching some chicks and growing them out, select future breeders without this trait. What would you do? Is there another option I am not considering? Are you seeing red leakage often with this color? Thanks for any opinions!
I will be hatching out some chocolates soon but it will take a while to know what I have. What age are the roosters? Does he have their parents?

Blue male X Chocolate female =

50/50
Blue roosters, split to (recessively carrying) the Choc gene

You're so smart. I like the Blue male X Chocolate female option. If she only had black hens, huh? That's a combination. I'm going to try in the future. Chocolate Roo and Black hens. I'll know who is what anyway.
 
Would a chocolate rooster x lavender hen = chocolate/lavender split? Since both are recessive which color would show?

I don't think so. I believe the Lavender gene is diluting (except when bred to black) I believe it would lighten the chocolate color or any color it is bred to except black.... Is that correct Jeremy?

I have no idea what the combination of 2 copies of Lavender and Chocolate would look like, as they are both dilute Black I'd imagine the color would be a gray-brown, lighter than Choc but darker than Lavender... who knows though, I don't think a visibly Chocolate and Lavender bird has ever been bred!

I don't know how to use that calculator but thought I would add this from Keiths information on the Lavender gene. I think it would be an interesting gene to work with.

"Lavender can also be used to create lots of new shades and colours as it is a diluting gene as long as the bird is carrying two doses of Lavender . According to this table Lavender will cover Chocolate, so a bird with 2 copies of Lav and Choc will most likely look like a pure Lavender, with some color leakage.
