The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I've finally figured out the breed of chicken I want to keep and raise and have my starter flock of 8 BBS hens and one rooster along with two 8-9 week gold laced chicks. I'm always interested in learning about genetics and breeding! Am waiting for my NPIP testing/certification although I don't intend on producing much stock...just a few small hatches a year (for now...LOL) And I have some chocolates and silver laced chicks on order...

Looks to be a handsome boy from this angle!

With your Blues, watch the shade of their feathers. When breeding proper Blues you want a bird with a medium slate blue hue, with dark/black lacing around each feather. "Medium" being a kind of problematic term, because what I define as medium colored, may be different from what you call medium, or the next person.

Darker Blues can throw properly colored birds, it's all about selective breeding to produce the birds you want.

This girl doesn't have the best lacing, but she has good ground color overall.

That said, preference is also key- if you prefer darker Blues, great! Your hen does have what looks like lovely lacing.

Sort of an odd question, but I have 5 full grown orpington ladies and I will be moving about 4 hours away to a new house, and I have no clue how to safely travel with them to cause them lease amount of stress. Have any of you guys moved with your birds and if so how can I help make it as painless as possible for them to travel?
