Anyone have advice or experience with Red Cuckoo color? I woul like them to be darker overall. More mahogany, and much less yellow. Here are the dozen I am starting with. (Fancy Chick)

Available on my yard are one black orpington hen (english), one black split lavender hen and black split cockerel, and a batch of red orpingtons(english) in the bator.

Because the color seems to lighten with each generation we did some research and this is the best information we were able to fine. This comes from Essex Orpingtons

"For breeding purposes we have found that breeding red cuckoo over red cuckoo seems to lighten the red with each generation, but over solid colour hens the red retains its strength. With this in mind our group comprises two double factor males over solid colour[deep mahogany] red hens. This ensures that the offspring retain the richness of colour required."

Hope this information helps. We no longer have Reds or Red Cuckoos but I would be interested in seeing your progress.

Got my first two eggs yesterday! The chooks are a week shy of 6 months. They've been squatting for the cockerel for about a week. Now I just have to get them to use the nest boxes (one laid under the roosts [I know that was Phoebe, my black] and one laid out in the run [unknown, but I suspect Clorinda, my splash]. I left the eggs from yesterday in the boxes to hopefully encourage them to lay there. Today I'll get some false eggs or golf balls for that purpose.
