The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I used to have a pair.... then a trio. I found that the SLOs are so docile that a 4th was fine. The roost in the tractor is short because the set up is narrow. It's tempting, though. I also have the advantage of sending the extra female to @homeschoolin momma. Most of her birds can be traced back to me in some way, so it's like having my own back-up flock. I'm trying to talk her into taking one of my turkeys now. That hen has such a social, funny personality. Processing this year's boys will be hard enough, but I don't think I can do her. Beside, there's not much meat on her. I also have a friend in WI that is always up for more feathered friends.

It's going to be a long, long time before I get SLO eggs again. My new cockerel is so low in the pecking order. It's one thing to be bullied by the big turkeys, but he just lost to my Sebright hen! She put him in his place in seconds, then my Leghorn chased him away.

Poor guy has low self-esteem.

Poor little dude. Mine haven't been fertile lately. I think he's not interested because it's cold.

My males are still active, but they do slow down a lot when there's snow and temps in single digits or lower.

I have a little serama cockerel who's free ranging and loving life. (He doesn't know he's not here to stay.) He has no problem with self esteem and I've seen him mate the leghorn a few times. He spends his time strutting outside the bantam coop, but there was no sense trying to integrate him since I'm not keeping him. He lives with my Orpingtons & turkeys. He has no problem fitting in with the full sized poultry. (Except NO ONE dares to breed my sebright, Trouble. She's in her own category.)

How cute is he acting like he's a real chicken?! 😂
Pretty much. I sold his sisters but didn't know what to do with him. I kept him in the yard and he's always right in the middle of it all. He was tid-bitting for the hens in that photo above. I nearly fell over when he attempted to mount an orp hen laying down in the shade. She didn't even bother to stand up; he lost his balance and slipped off.
