I don't know why but some of the boys are just rough on the hens. Imogene had a blue male that did that to the girls and we ended up having to sew up the gashes. They got alright but we took him completely out of the pen. I am sure saddles would make a difference. You Charlie has never even messed a feather up.
Charlie and his girls. The wind is blowing pretty strong
Joy, here is Chester in with a pen of egglayers. He is actually getting pretty bossy and tried to get on one of them today. He will be 7 months old next month
Sorry I couldn't get a good pic of him. I was inside his pen and didn't have room to get back far enough.
Nava these are for you. This is Hoss and girls
He is a big boy
This is not the greatest pic of Charlie Jr. he was a june hatch from last year.
This is Prince. he has the same blue color as Charlie
I've had a few of the gashes too. Some of the boys are just really not very gentlemanly when it comes to the ladies. I use saddles and they really help a lot !! As a matter of fact, I'm getting ready to order more saddles tomorrow.
Tricia - Gorgeous babies !!! Can't wait to see them grow up !
Julie - Fantastic pictures !! I can't believe you have full blooms !! We are having some nice warm weather here - 75 today, but nothing in full bloom. We do have some buds on the trees and the daffodils are coming up. I'm ready for warmer weather. Of course, in July, I'll be begging for the cold again. LOL.
Anyway - some of those black girls are to die for. I love the black girl in picture #5 of your first batch. I'd love it if she migrated north !! Chester looks good (from what I can tell). I went over to visit Duke today and he is just stunning. I am soooooooo regretting letting him go !! I can "borrow" him from my girlfriend, though, and let him mate with some of my girls and I just might be doing that...he's a beauty. I didn't have my camera with me or I'd have taken some pictures of him. She also has a 3/4 English boy from me that is looking just awesome too.
Everybody here got hair cuts yesterday, so I'm hoping for some fertile eggs in a few days.
Thanks Joy, I would love to see pics of Duke. I am looking forward to breeding Chester. His comb is getting red now and he is starting to mature a bit.
I think I have to keep the blacks with Champ. I have six in there of my top birds. I have some fertile eggs now too. I am looking foward to seeing how the chicks turn out.
I didn't see a pic of the O's . Have you got them separated with Sirius yet? Those will be awesome birds for sure.
Joy/Julie
What size saddle do you order, I have one here and it seems to tight. How tight should it be and what size do you order. My roosters will stand on those poor girls all day like they are waiting for the "mood" to hit them again. I too have had to mend a few backs and sides of the girls. I am really considering AI, hoping that someone can show me how its done at the show this weekend, if it's not to gross I may try it.....
I get saddles here from LoveMyChix (Tess). I just ordered some new ones and she is making them custom sized for me, 9" long by 10-11" wide. The regular X-Large is too small for them. Tess's saddles are really good and she has an excellent price on them and she ships quick at a very reasonable rate. I am just going to put the roosters in with my birds for a few days and then take them out for a few days and put them back in, etc. I've also considered the AI thing. I don't think it is supposed to be too bad. There was a great YouTube video on it. If I can find it, I'll post the link.
