The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Those are just great Joy. Looking forward to the next batch. I am going to try tomorrow to get a few pics.

Nigel (I love Nigel's tail and shape, but I'm hoping his chest fills out a bit more). I love this silly guy - he is such a goober.

the lacing on Blueberry is just about perfect. I really Nigel's tail. Love Sirius.

Good news. I just candled and will have 18 possibles for two weeks from now. I have 8 due to hatch next week. Most out of Charlies pen but a few from every pen. I may have some splash for sale if anyone wants splash. I have two from a splash pen that I have set up just to help a friend with a project. I don't normally breed splash to splash. They are all really good birds.

Absolutely beautiful Joy!

ETA: Nigel looks like he's grown up a lot and Sirius looks to be a wide boy. I bet he and the O's will make huge babies.

Julie, the idea of getting Splash babies is veeery tempting...

Hi, This may not be the thread to ask this, but has anyone had one of their Orpingtons getting "wry Neck" ? If so, what did you do?

My really large blue Orpington, was fine and dandy until yesterday morning. We had one really cold night here. Freezing temps. I want to the coop yesterday morning and she was squatting down with her neck all twisted looking up. I checked her out and there is no sign of injury. I researched it and concluded it was wry neck. And to treat with vitamins in the water. I have separated her out to help her eat. Any suggestions?

Question for those of you raising these beautiful birds, too...
I have two pens, one rooster and 2-3 hens per pen. They are 10 months old, and the roosters are HUGE. Last night I caught one of the boys "stepping on" one of the girls, and when he was done he just sat there, balancing on her back. I knocked him off, and just as quickly the other girl came up and started pecking on her side, under her wing. So I shooed her off, picked up the poor girl, and realized that she had a huge gash on each side... infected and sore. Three of my 5 hens have these gashes from two roosters. No spurs yet - I checked - but they're getting close to 10 lbs each and though I clip their toenails, they still managed to injure the girls.

I never saw any blood, nor any sign of pain, and it was completely hidden by their wings.
Do you have any troubles with this? Have you tried saddles, and do they work? I am beside myself right now, as all 3 of the hens are my beautiful English girls. They have been separated from the boys, but these are my breeders and I can't separate the boys into their own pen due to room and fighting.

Will the saddles work? Or do I just need to cull one of the boys and just allow conjugal visits from time to time?
