Question for those of you raising these beautiful birds, too...
I have two pens, one rooster and 2-3 hens per pen. They are 10 months old, and the roosters are HUGE. Last night I caught one of the boys "stepping on" one of the girls, and when he was done he just sat there, balancing on her back. I knocked him off, and just as quickly the other girl came up and started pecking on her side, under her wing. So I shooed her off, picked up the poor girl, and realized that she had a huge gash on each side... infected and sore. Three of my 5 hens have these gashes from two roosters. No spurs yet - I checked - but they're getting close to 10 lbs each and though I clip their toenails, they still managed to injure the girls.
I never saw any blood, nor any sign of pain, and it was completely hidden by their wings.
Do you have any troubles with this? Have you tried saddles, and do they work? I am beside myself right now, as all 3 of the hens are my beautiful English girls. They have been separated from the boys, but these are my breeders and I can't separate the boys into their own pen due to room and fighting.
Will the saddles work? Or do I just need to cull one of the boys and just allow conjugal visits from time to time?
