I lost a hen to a fox mid day two days ago.

The fox had nerve enough to run toward the house grab the hen in the front yard and run down the drive way. The drive way is the only unfenced spot on the property I guess it didn't want to jump the fence. This is my first fox attack ever! Electric fence and poultry netting is going up. I think they are feeding babies that's why they are being so daring.

Yikes...these "fox" postings make a person wonder how secure their set up really is. We just bought fencing yesterday to fence in our coops and runs. I figure two fences will help. We live in the boonies of north Michigan and see eagles, bobcat, bear, coons, fox ...you name it. I was already paranoid but the brazeness of your fox episodes make me more so. I read recently about putting "peeper" flashing eyes on your run area...on a timer ...for nighttime. I bought 3 sets of them online and I'm putting those up too!

Eek! Fox attacks freak me out!

I'm so sorry for those of you who lost birds. I've always thought they were lovely when I saw them...but that's because they weren't in my yard.

My girls were free ranging not in the pen, one of the few pretty days we've had so they were out.

I lost a hen to a fox about this time of year 4 years ago. They were out free ranging and I was in my office working. My office window faces the back where the chickens free range. I saw a fox come out of the woods and grab one of my hens and run off with it. It made me sick to see, but I was actually glad that I saw it because at least I knew what had happened. My birds never free range anymore unless we're sitting outside with them. We did set up a Havahart trap, but never caught the fox - never saw him again either, which really surprised me. I figure the fox was trying to feed his/her family.

Well fortunately we don't have fox here in the city... just crack heads.

I have lost 2 birds over the years though to hawks, so this year we invested in a big roll of netting to cover everyone's runs.
