The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Wooh! My apologies to everyone for having to face that big makeup-less picture of me this early in the morning!!!

TNBarn is just an awesome person. She held my hand through the whole first-poultry-show process. I wouldn't have even found the place if she hadn't talked me all the way in.

I discovered that showing isn't for me. I don't have time to grease combs and wattles, I barely have time to bathe my kids. I literally scooped Roo out of the poopy litter and entered him in the show. AND it hurt my feelings when the judge said that Roo was "too heavy for type". Faced with the choice of winning shows or keeping my hefty boys, it's not really a hard decision.

The trip was definitely worth it. I never knew I had so many fellow chicken junkies around me. I'm already planning for the one in November.

Hi Julie,

That's exactly what Anita from Ramsley Orpingtons in the UK told me to do : a chocolate rooster over the black hens. That's why I alsoimported those black hens that come from David Pownall.

Well, I finally remembered to post some pictures of my GL chicks. They are about 5-1/2 weeks old here. The pictures aren't that great, but it was the best I could get.

It's sure interesting watching them feather out - so different than what I am used to. Anybody have any GL that we can compare notes?

Wow! So much to catch up on!

Joy: The GL look great- in other breeds I've had, the lacing wasn't nearly so apparent early on, so I can jump to the conclusion that it will look superb as it matures into the clean lacing with mature feathering.

TNBarnQueen: That boy 'Roo' is wonderful, too, and I'm sure your chicks will be going by about 6-8 months...it's up to the bird. We got through this last round fairly unscathed, though many took significant damage. It is a normal spring in Kansas...I need a new windshield from the tennis-ball-sized hail a couple of weeks ago.

tennesseeckn: You look great! As far as unkempt in the early morning, ask Marc what he thought of my early morning pic...he thought it was my husband (I'm generally unphotogenic, it's true)! And I'm sure the judge hadn't had enough coffee. Too heavy, indeed!!!

BLaBauve: Those chicks are coming along nicely!

Anna
: English are heavier with a significantly fluffier skirt and shorter legs, though overall larger frame than American Orps. The two 'styles' of bird diverged in the past and have become a very different looking bird, as well as having differing standards for shape and definition.

Whew. Off to go deal with bird bedtime...17 coops and counting!
