The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I just wanted to share a cute story...

I have this OEGB pullet (Bob) that was my free exotic with my McMurray order of laying hens. I have never had bantams, so this iddy, biddy little bird-looking-thing has been a real learning experience for me. (Like the time I thought she was missing and stayed up all night worrying only to find out in the morning that she had started roosting in the RAFTERS.)

I have a couple of my big Orp boys in a bachelor pen. Bob flew up and over the pen divider and landed in their pen. (I built these pens for chickens that don't FLY, for crying out loud) Blue (my biggest blue boy) eyeballed her then started making his, "Oooh, look at this great place to lay an egg" noise in each of the corners of the pens. Bob dutifully followed him around and settled into the corner and laid her first egg!! It was the size of a gumball laying in a giant, orp-sized hole in the shavings. When she was done she flew up and over the divider again to go on about her business.

They have to be the most oddball couple ever.

Probably blood pressure drop from the heat, She should be fine just make sure to give her good cool water and or electro lites when possible..also provide the best shade you can for your birds.

Last year i lost one large black english and almost lost another but caught her in time to drench her down with cool water..these large birds have a rough time when the temps hit triple digits thats for sure, this includes the american type to, my araucana have no trouble with high temps they seem to love it.

I collected six beautiful brown eggs from my girls yesterday and it was soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo hard not to set them in my Brinsea.

However, for the first time since the beginning of the year I have NO brooder lights on in my house, NO peeping babies in my bedroom, NO lanky "teenagers" in my laundry room and only 1 incubator going with eggs inside that aren't even mine that will be picked up as soon as they hatch!

I feel like a free man, I just cannot give that up right now!

Or could I...

It's so nice to not sleep with a brooder night light on... for the first time in 6 months I don't feel like a 5 year old who's afraid of the dark!

I think I'll wait a few months more and let my grow out pens empty out completely before adding any new babies. Most of my juvies will be ready to join the grown up flocks in about a months time, so maybe then.

Are you still moving Patty?

Jeremy - I know exactly what you mean !! I haven't had any babies or toddlers in the house for a while now. Incubators are all put away and I even took my brooders, lights, etc., all out to the barn. I had gathered some lovely eggs from Winston & Clementine, and Winston & Minerva. I brought them in and marked them. I was really debating dragging out an incubator and setting them. I decided to crack a couple first to see if they were fertile. It's been so hot here, I haven't seen Winston being very "active." Anyway, they weren't fertile and I was kinda glad, but also a little disappointed, too. LOL.

I have been sitting out there in the yard just admiring all my pretty Orpy juvies. So glad i am not in a hatching time. We finallly got some rain and it is amazing how much difference it makes than watering from the garden hose.
