Thanks KidCody- I appreciate the compliment. I went and took a look at your BYC page - your Jubilees and Chocolates look really great !! Your

chocolate looks like he is a beautiful, rich chocolate, and not that dirty kind of black that I've seen.

Thank you!

Alot of folks on this thread do not show their birds.
I know Bamma had shown a spectacular Black pullet last year who won in Florida I believe.. I go to alot of shows in and around Indiana and do not see any UK birds. I did see one Black male at the Kentuckiana Show in June who got BV but could not beat Doug's Buffs. I am getting the impression that many judges are now leaning towards the tighter feathered Orps. I had thought Fred's Buffs would do very well at Crossrooads only to see the BV and BB go to a tighter feathered Buff pullet. She was very nice, but I got the feeling they are not wanting the looser feathered birds to win. THIS is just a guess. No one has said anything to me. Just my gut feeling is what I am going by. And I think this way by what birds I have seen at the shows I attend who win.

Thanks lildinkem I know the tails and angle on the UK birds are like night and day. I would have thought the tails would have been the first thing that either made or broke the showing.
I live in SW Iowa and would like to attend a few shows this coming year.. I have been out of the loop so long I don't even know where to look for shows in my area. Can you help me with that?

There is a site called EXHIBITION POULTRY MAGAZINE who lists all upcoming shows within a given month. That and Poultry Press usually are the first 2 places I would check. EXHIBITION POULTRY MAGAZINE is a free online magazine. And is usually a great resource of info. There is a new edition each month. Good for the beginner or the ole vet in our hobby.

Awesome.. googling them now..
When I look at my 50/50 UK /US birds I notice they have the cochin (dont' hit me) like look but they don't have the tail that the pure UK birds do, they have a tail, like the old Orps do.. As per tail.. what are the judges looking for? Do they stick to standards now days? with the 45 degree angle? Or are they turning more for the rummpless look of the UK birds?

I am not sure which auctions you might be referring to - but I have some auctions for double barred lemons that are running on eBay. While I cannot comment on what hens most sellers are using I can say confident that myself and Marie (bulletproof) down in Texas have the best looking Lemons that I have seen. I think I mentioned this earlier in the thread - but the lemon cuckoos in my opinion is a breed that was not 100% perfected when it was released.

In other words - you will have roosters off the Middleton lines that will not show any barring - but will have the 'look' of the English lemon. The people who started breeding the lemons with a small number of eggs or chicks are not going to have quality birds. You will have to cull heavily this breed! I started with 20 chicks and have got it down to 9. I culled 5 roosters off the bat that did not have the barring present. The younger roosters seem to show great barring - but then kind of loose it when they mature. I will be using new imported blood to help out this breed as well as creating a chocolate cuckoo color for 2012/2013.

On the hens with no barring - the lemon cuckoo hens will not show a strong presence of barring .... very very light - almost what I would call not there. The hen I have posted on my auction is about as good as it gets for the English lemons. If anyone has one that looks better - please post in the forums.

Regards,
Richard

Pampered Poultry,
Richard,
Glad you stated that about culling hard, but not only the variety you stated. Seems like people buy hatching eggs expect them all to hatch out as stormers. The old timers always said about only 10% would be acceptable that is 1 out of 10 chicks that hatch except for a strain that is prepotent which most are not. I have not seen 100% hatch yet that meets the SOP's. Perhaps I bought or sat the wrong eggs.

Roger I meant to tell you I love your birds. They look good.

JaJewel. I won Champion English last year at the Sunshine Classic in Jan with a black pullet. I have had BB, BV with several birds. Their are numerous folks who have shown pics of here of birds that came from my lines that have placed or won at various shows. The Secretary of the Orp Club has won BV several times with a Blue Cock she hatched from eggs I sent her. If you have a bird worth showing I say show it.

I have never carried any of mine to a show where their wasn't a lot of attention from the folks attending the shows. BTW the Black pullet that won last year I hatched from eggs that Joy sent me that were crossed with Minerva/Winston blend. Minerva being from my lines. Our lines crossed do make some fine looking Orps.

Looking forward to seeing what everyone hatches this year. I have one breed pen set up so far. None of my hens are laying, only pullets so far. All my pullets starting laying good size eggs. I am collecting off of one pen this week to check for fertility.
