I just hope that this thread doesn't fall prey to some of the bickering I've seen lately. I know I have made comments that were misunderstood and had me on the outs with folks at times. But lets just all remember that we all have different opinions, that's human nature. And try to be understanding. Lets please keep any personal remarks also to PM's, ok? It's fine to have a war and a huge fight over PM, but please not in the open forum.

Nah, it won't. The people who I know that are truly committed to these birds are good people.

Who all have wonderful taste in chickens. =)

i have been misunderstood at times too..i hate the bickering..so many nice people, fantastic birds..if we work together it would be great..i see some cases where the damage done is so bad there is no correcting it..ive walked into the middle of those not knowing or understanding what is happening, only hard feelings..i do not like burning bridges, you never know when you might have to cross back over that bridge.. .power struggles only wind up being detrimental to the breeds in the end.

I am new and still learning about this breed. I love it. I want to learn.

Question: if you breed a splash to any other color will you always get blue, so long as the other color didn't carry a blue gene too?
So splash to black gives you blue 100% of the time. If I bred a white to splash would I get blue? Just wondering about how the blue gene works.

I was reading this:
The splash colouring in my opinion is truly fascinating and a very useful tool to producing not only Blue and Splash Orpingtons but when used in combination with other colours can extend the possible range of Blue ground colour birds you can breed. A Splash bird is actually a Blue bird in pure form so any offspring that has a Splash parent will carry one blue gene so will be blue in appearance."

Beautiful birds and colors on his site.

You could. What happens is that blue birds only have the one blue gene. Splash have two. It only takes one of the blue genes to make a blue bird. So it's entirely possible that the offspring of a splash might well always give blue babes no matter what. The offspring of the resulting blue though is a crap shoot. Which is at least part of the reason black is usually used. More predictable results further down the line.
