The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Well I have a personal story that I was so shocked that it happened that I still cant beleive it..this probably belongs in emergencies and diseases. but it involved my english orp baby..its about how tenacious a racoon can be..I had my baby EOs out in the A frame that has heater in back house part, it is lined with rabbit 1 by 1/2 " wire that racoons cant reach through and weasles cant fit through..so I thought..at night the babies when it warmed up slept out in the A frame little too close to the edge, well over several nights this racoon worked a hole right where the babies were sleeping, he grabbed an australorp and the EOblue..I was so stunned when I opened thier door and a couple didnt come out..when I looked in there , it was pretty shocking.

I couldnt bring myself to take pictures of how bad things were , just trying to save them..the australorp had a big wound on back, EO had just been completly opened up skin pulled open approx 1/2 in below the hip bone, entire thigh was ripped open entire side,, I ran got surgical tape scissors, antibiotics everything,,had to use rubbing alcohol as steril..what a mess..I seriously did not think this chick would live, I shaved the baby feathers all the way round, cleaned it up the best I could..pulled the skin together, used cut strips of the tape as a butterfly stitch there was a big gapping hole down into the leg that i cleaned with warm water and syringe the best I could but it was deep..tried to pull that somewhat back together but it was stubborn..I didnt have high hopes it would make it..fretted for days..i slathered the outside of wound with antibiotic cream, and closed it up with lg bandaid..I thought well, at least I tried..I will probably go out tommorrow morn and find it down and gone..the australorp had a little more fight ..patched that one up second as it was only slightly better and trying a little more..

I should have taken a pic of this bird with the big blue bandaid over butterfly stitches..it was quite a sight, then put antibiotics in both waters..for about a week it was touch and go .finnaly got ahold of vet she came down and gave shot of tylavan? cant remember the name in breast.of both..the australorp had well rebounded..but the EO was still kind of struggling along..would get up drink and eat a little which helped then right back to sleep, very very lame..

I finnaly got around to taking a picture or 2, the EO developed a huge pocket of infection in a blister like lesion back of right thigh despite high doses antibiotics. . the injury was on the side under wing and I didnt want to disturb it to try and take a pic of the scarring .

EO and aussie ICU CCU.
well on the road to recovery

You poor thing!!! What a good job

! That is my biggest nightmare. It is almost impossible to build something that those pesky varmints can't get through........They can even work a slide lock

Thank you so much!..you know, when you love these birds, its so hard to walk in and see something like that first thing in the morning..thought it was odd that some were missing when I opened the A frame door..they charge the door and come flying out of there..who knew that racoon as small as they are could be so strong..he ripped the heavy guage wire from the wall, made a neat hole big enough to grab through..somone went out of their way to get these birds to me and was so generous , so I just couldnt say anything about it until I knew everything was going to be OK. that chick was limp and didnt even want to fight it out so I didnt have high hopes it would make it throu the night...at one point I went to pick it up, not much response there...much to my suprise it did make it, today is outside running around catching buggs..my vet is swamped this year with very expensive baby horse problems , there are huge hunter jumper and dressage barns all over this area..she said there is something going on..tons of birthing problems and aftermath this year..so I did all but the chest shot myself, I did have a scheduled visit with her to learn AI and horse tooth float so she did the shots then..

For a long time even thou showing improvement, that baby was coal hot when you went to pick it up to change dressing..I thought there has to be infection in there but it wasnt presenting..the antibiotics chased the infection into that boil but it wasnt clearing up, too much infection for 1 baby to fight..So I used small guage hubb to extract it..it was tricky had to keep moving the needle around and drawing back same time without hurting the baby..luckily it sat still for me..probably feeling the releif.. today when I picked it up, felt like a normal chick should , normal temp, but Im going to have to keep an eye on it in case I have to remove more..I guess it helps that I work in ER as fill in..used to work there full time..Im not medical personel trained but paper work bed assign and have seen my share of everything..held many a hand of babys getting stitch so I dont think there is anything I havnt seen...if you can imagine it, even if you cant, Ive seen it..you emotions get set to the side and you jump into a quick plan, afterward it hits you..you have to be thick skinned and quick. try your best and doesnt hurt to pray a little.

waiting to go outside

the white thing in the cage is a frozen water bottle as it is hot today. those stay frozen all day

the infection right upper thigh has just been drained using sm guage needle , did not lance it for fear introduction of another type of bacteria..you can see where it was .

this is a lot of infection for such a little bird and with bombardment of antibiotic treatments.the neddle had to be moved to remove as much as possible..

this racoon still comes back every night despite many hair pulling contests with my dog who has treed this animal every night , it doesnt give up..we are borrowing a trap.
Good thing mom is such a good nurse! try honey buns in the trap. That way you won't catch cats, and coons love 'em. A .38 works well too.

Rockinpaints, What a thrill!! this is so much fun..Thanks so much for sharing the pics!! The treat of the day.they are chunks already.those silver babies will be snow white..

You are so blessed to be able to do all that yourself, Takes determination, heart, a VERY strong stomach and a true love for your animals!

Pip. Pip, hurray! Would love to see your incubator. Nice set up.

Simply amazing that they will be turning white!
smile.png
Oh yes, they turn snow white , no brassiness or cream..and they dont sun bleach to cream..2 different people told me that..one in a private e-mail and a phone call, a person that deals with them and is respected, the other is my nephew, he lives in england..actually 2 nephews that show chickens..they dont do it as much as they used to..he siad that the judges will literally pull a feather, sometimes take it outside in the light, if the feather shaft is not exactly the color they want ,a silver something they pass that bird by..lot of entries in that class over there..I wish I would have paid more attention to him..he told me a lot about them..he said he has seen judge carry several blacks outside looking in outside light at feather color when class is tough, he said sometimes the classes are real tough,,too many good birds in a row..look like somone cut them out with a cookie cutter..so they have to look for any little thing like a bit of purple barring.

Im still learning too..Trying to get Liam to join here and post some pics of his birds and his brothers..he takes lot of pics at shows over there.and judges at work..they have huge egg shows too, and freinds that only show eggs.
