The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Agreed. They are so laid back its ridiculous.

Today's baby rooster brought to you by the letter "O"!

He was a surprise from Jordan Farms. Definitely not a Swedish Flower Hen

Is his mother named Dolly??? How's that for a full breast Walt?

I've been searching these posts and can't find where someone said what size leg bands they use. Am I getting size 12 for the 4H show? The metal leg bands issued by the state wouldn't fit my Marans roo, so I didn't even try the Orps?

Any suggestions?.

On most Orpingtons (US) the males take a larger size than the hens. You may have to use the 14/16 intended for turkeys. Or you can use zip ties (photo below) and with a sharpie marker write a number on the zip tie. If using a zip tie, it should be a wider version so the number can be larger.

With more valuable birds, you may also want to consider a wing band. This is difficult to remove and most thieves are in such a hurry, they may not think to look for a wing band. (See 2nd photo).

Theft should not be an issue at a 4H show, being small. But at large shows both stealing and mistakes happen. I once got home with some else bird. Nicole (then 5) grabbed her Buff Orpington bantams and placed them in her carriers. We then stacked them in one spot in the Arkansas State Fair Starr Barn until all of our birds were uncooped and we could drive inside to load. Took about a half hour or so. When we got home my phone rang. It was Roy Autry aka cowboygormet. Seems his granddaughters lone BOB pullet had been "stolen". I went out and checked our pens and sure enough, we had too many pullets. I quickly checked the band numbers and the third pullet I checked was her. We fed and carefully cared for her for a month. A friend then transported her to a Louisiana show to Roy. Nicole is no longer permitted to assist herself at shows. Crossroads had several losses, about 10 or so I was told.

There is nor sure fire way to mark your bird. Each breeder does it a bit different. I prefer the Atlas Leg Bands that we use for NPIP. On the large Orpington males we use two leg bands. The band number is something like #112-113. These leg bands seal well and are difficult to remove. Seeing someone trying to remove a permanent legband at a show is suspicious and should be reported. When I am testing a large male or banding my own, I just connect two bands together, then wrap the band around the male's leg and connect the remaining ends.

The bands are available from http://www.cutlersupply.com. The zip ties at your local hardware or WalMart, Lowes etc.

Thank you so much for touching on the subject of banding. Sure is an eye opener to realize how easy it is to loose a bird at a show.. You know.. perhaps... there needs to be a unified way to mark all the birds the same... I think the wing bands are probably the best solution. It could be worked like the AKC with papers... Register a bird... get a record and a wing band for each bird you want to show. You could use that number for that bird each time you enter him/her into any show. Thus it would be very easy to keep complete show records of all your birds :)

It is just a thought.

I bought a toe puncher last yr.... and forgot to mark my chicks this year.... UGGGGG So they are banded again this yr.

I would like to know how to put the bands on the winds and where before actually purchasing any.
