Hi there, the socket only holds up to a 60 watt bulb and that is what I generally use (you could use colored bulbs though). I drilled a hole in the end of each box and set in the socket. I cover the top of the box on the end where the bulb is so they can get in the heat if they'd like. I have the boxes from 3 feet long to 6 feet. I think it is 6 feet- they are the clear plastic ones you can get at Christmas time to hold an artificial tree - that is the only time I have ever seen the 6 foot ones.
