The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

We got our first Chocolate Bantam Orp egg from the pair we got from pips&peeps! We were super surprised they started laying already.

Now, if I can teach her to lay in the NESTBOX and not the GROUND, that will be another thing...

Sarah, those golden beauties will add sunshine to even a dreary day. :love Have you weighed that boy? I don't know how he can grow feathers with that big build he is growing at the same time? He must eat non stop.

Lynne, ditto for your trio. :love You can tell you don't change the color in your pictures! When you have the real deal, it shows!!! They are truly golden.

Great weekend everyone!
He does indeed eat almost non-stop. Hungry would have been a good name for him. At first he was Oliver, as in, "can I have more, please?"

Cant get over how much they have grown and filled out Sarah...your doing fantastic with them...they just look wonderful..I just have a cheap camera ..it just depends on the lighting at the time..good old sunlight puts a spotlight on everything..problem was..we wernt getting any sunlight until that day..so ran out and grabbed a few pics..

One of my freinds told me many years ago that these are large jungle fowl..they are omnivore, will eat everything from crickets to grass to salamanders even minnow in ideal conditions with seeds and grains they find..you have to kind of make up for what mother nature isnt handing out..I dont have to do as much in summer because there are a lot of things in the pastures to eat..the winter is another story..I feel like the gormet chicken pantry..

It's just refreshing to look at actual pictures. I spend much time, in fact too much time, looking at GL around the world it seems. Only to closely look and see that they've been altered. I don't plan on importing anytime soon, or if at all, but it would be nice to have confidence that what I see would in fact be the parent stock. UGH! Nothing's ever easy.

I do have a solution for your winter feeding! You won't like it though. I can send you all you would need for a mealworm farm. 100% protein that costs you nothing but an occasional kitchen scrap. Can't beat it.

Good idea! And mealworms are so easy to grow, you can literally just forget about them but they do best if you throw them some vegetable scraps every week or whatever. Just don't let moths get in there.

I am hoping to get some ideas here. For years I have used stock tanks for brooders. Well they take up a lot of room and thinking about doing something a little different this year. I am wanting to get some ideas. What do ya'll use for brooders or what does our setup look like? I would like to do something stackable if possible, and easy to clean and senitize is preferred. I love the idea of GQF brooders but they are so pricey. I also just saw the GQF Start and Grow Unit. Wow, great idea but still pricey. Anyways would love to hear some thoughts from ya'll!! Thank you.

Hi Tonea! This is a picture of my hatcher/brooder room. (I think I may have posted it before but don't remember)

Congratulations! How old are they? I Have my first trio of bantam chocolates and I'm curious when they may start to lay:)

Nellie,
Those are some cool looking brooder boxes. I can't quite see the set up with the light. How many watts is the bulb? Is it just a corded light socket through the side or what?
