The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Renie and Vivi.....you ain't never lied......Hotter than a Witch's Tit.....LOL
When we lived in Waxahachie, TX.....a mountain lion killed a new born colt and also a boxer puppy we had.......we even called the Wildlife and Fisheries to please come help us to move this female mt. lion along or trap it and move it......they said "No" But.....could we please take pictures of the paw prints and put a penny or quarter inside the print to get a size variation? Oh, and to please not shoot it?!?! Right!!!! Then 1 morning I walked out and the dang thing was sleeping on top of one of our round hay bales in the hay pasture! Well......I'll just say we got the Mt. Lion to move along! Yeah....gotta love them critters....LOL But, I will say one thing.....I didn't have many problems with Coyotes there....only because I owned a full blooded Red Mexican Wolf...LOL Wolf trumps coyote every time!
I'll add 2 more critters to the list to watch out far in that area where your at galanie.........wild hogs and big snakes. I would definitely look into an LGD to help protect your livestock (birds and anything else that you choose to raise). Just sayin........been there and done that.....LOL Congrats and good luck on your new place! DO PLANT LOTS OF TREES!!!! Then do like me and cut out the roof to go around the tree....LOL Hey.....IT'S ALL GOOD! Take care of your pretty birds!

Thank you Jobele

'Lsgd's are ovverrated. Every one I've had ate my birds. Spend thousands on dogs to protect my birds and have lost more birds to dogs that were supposed to protect my flock than from wild critters and can't get rid of the dogs that are killing my stock. No one wants em.
i have heard that some people have even gotten lucky with a mutt who with the proper training became a great LSG
not to say that every mutt could become a great chicken dog , nope not saying that
just that a few somehow have.

i only have one black cockerel to go through winter with. I sure hope he turns out ok. Been meaning to get some pics...

Our LGD has been a godsend. We have 2 house dogs as well, a Great Dane and a Yorkie, I have not lost a chicken to a dog yet....famous last words, right? The Yorkie can get nasty and start to chase when we are catching em up, but a quick correction usually sets him straight.

Sarah..the part about walking through the brush with stovepipes on got me......I know they have rattlesnake roundup in Pa..but don't recall stovepipes. maybe there were But I don't remember it...maybe because its all rocks..

One of Our dog sleeps with his face right in the window..if he sees anything out there he bounds all over the bed to let him out..he is really rough on raccoons and possum...the only time I worry is when he steps out the door and freezes..that means bear...he will go out and harass it but a couple times he got harassed back..one of them picked him up by hind leg and threw him like a toy..he had a nice wound from that had to be patched up..but it doesn't stop him from giving the bears a hard time ..he just thinks about it befor he does it..the pug dog goes after everything teeth first except chickens..he knows chickens are part of the family and wont touch them..but hes like Tasmanian devil with stray dogs , people, cats he doesn't know, and almost anything that moves..We have those coy dogs all around this area too..Cornell said they are coyote wolf cross..Im sorry but the few Ive seen are wolf and howl like wolf not coyote..a few of them yip and carry on but then there are those long melodic howls.one night they were right out behind the chicken coops howling..must have been a little un nerving for the chickens..the pug dog took off out there..everything got very quiet except some growing..I wasn't sure if that little dog would come back in one piece...he did...both dogs know they are chicken shepherds, have never bothered a chicken..the chickens walk all around the dogs when they are sleeping in the yard....they are priceless poultry protectors..they only thing that has ever slipped by them was weasel.. funny, the other day there was a whole flock of wild turkey over cleaning up the berry bushs with their babies and the dogs never made any moves, they knew the turkey were over there..if a stray dog or person or neighbor cat shows up over there..its pandemonium..

My dogs think chickens are a hoot to kill :( I use multiple tall fences and Hotwire to keep them seperate and still worry. One of my kids went out the side door of the garage and left the door open. My Dobermans went in and killed every chick in there. I've taken them out with the grown hens a bunch, and I can set chickens on them when I am there- but there is no doubt in my mind that they would kill every chicken they could get too if I left them unsupervised.

I will never get a dog to protect chickens. Not to say that it does not work, as many of you attest that it does. I just have had the bad luck of underestimating dogs once. I'd rather have a coyote in my yard. They will eat chickens till they are full... Then stop killing.

I use Hotwire too keep all predators out. So far I've had no losses with this method. I wish I had chicken friendly dogs like you guys though!

We have two dogs one yorkie and a border collie. The yorkie couldn't do anything if he wanted to. So far the border collie keeps everything ran off (knock on wood) except once when it was raining so hard I decided to put him in the garage. That night the fence blew down and something killed some chickens.
The dogs don't even acknowledge that the chickens are around unless the chickens are trying to eat their food and they snaps at them. Pretty lucky.
It was funny one cold day I was outside working and the big dog came out of the dog house, then the little, and a chicken came out last. They were all in there huddled up.

We've had pyraneee and akbash. Neither are a cheap breed. All were born and raised with livestock. I have neither breed now. My small (all under 20 lb) mutts keep coons and possums away. I got a german shepherd pup at four weeks old and am raising her here my way. Hopefully it works out because we have mucho cyote issues.

A friend of mine has a German Shepard that's been raised with the chickens. She still at 2 yrs old thinks they're chew toys. She recently killed a couple chickens after getting loose. I hope you have better luck with your puppy!!
