The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

The Male you left at Home has Serious Quality I would like to see Longer Sickles up over Main Tail Feathers on Him, But Almost All Large Fowl Tails in this country Fail in this way Today. I would Like to have more People Notice this because Most Judges don't seem to notice it. Rock Tails are Bad for this they have evolved into long tailed freaks.

You have hit the nail on the head about Rock tails. There are too many of them on Orps ! The shorter main, STIFF, tails, with long coverts, are ORP.They need to be broad too. COBBY is what describes the bird, a bird of great substance, who has the capacity to lay also.

Thanks, you just noticed one of the questions I had about the sickles covering that..I wasnt sure is it just young bird? But the buff K was not like that, he had this neatness to the tail every step of the way while growing so it was good for me to have that comparison.....not sure what the remedy is for it..seems like a lot I see out there around different places have it , different degrees.. I have a lot of questions about a lot LOL..Im seeing it, they type is there , Just these details..these were actually german import to UK a cross was made there into UK whites then to US..

I find the Improper Long Tails most objectionable on the Male Birds of several Large Fowl Breeds. I sometimes wonder if Non Newbie's can't read or are Just Blind or Stupid.

Maybe they need some Old Standards to Stare at Images while Reading Descriptions OVER and OVER.

a lot of people at shows throw a little teramyacin in the water at shows and after..seems to help ward off spread of disease fresh in the morning its yellow color but by afternoon it turns a dirty brown so has to be made new every day..wont work for virus, but no bacterial diseases wander through birds.
How long before a show do you start it?

Thanks for the info on Bill Bacon..., I knew the bird was good, I just wasnt exactly sure how good...I was swarmed with people at that show wanting to know about him,....Im really glad you have had a chance to asses them up close as well..you have a lot of knowlege to draw on with buffs..I am beginner , but the first thing I thought when Vickie sent them was , its not so much feather length they have but the width is greater.. .That win is all Vickies..I am just the groomsman..these birds clean up real nice..pop them in a bath, scrub the fanny and they glow..I had to do little or nothing really, the white orp on the other hand was a different story..I was thinking one thing, but judge and I had a later talk and he corrected me on a few things I thought I knew..which was super helpful..I really liked his imput..he was to the point.. told himI left the better bird at home, and just really wanted to hear what he had to say about this one..great education for me..
I am going to my first show soon. Were there many other orps there? Was it a big show overall? I really should have gone to a show before I entered one so I could know what to expect and see what people do to get a bird ready.

Sorry jumping in. I was looking for pics of black orps to compare with mine. I am thinking mine have some english in them. They are about 4 months or so.

You will be fine chicksooner..go and have a great time, go in find the paper with your exhibitor number and locate your cages make sure you put right bird in right cage ,...people just mix the teramiacin in milk jug right at show and give it there to thier line of birds..they usually give you coop cups but I bring bigger ones for after judging just because my birds face wont fit in that little dixi cup.....

This country isnt like UK where shows where 500 - 1000 entrys out of 9000 are orps, they have lot of different varietys compared to US. ..some areas in US have more orps entered than others.... think of it like this ,Its not how many are entered, the question really is are they high quality? or a line of hatchery birds? so you can have 50 orps entered, and 49 of them are hatchery birds..so its hard to say at any time how many orps will be entered where.. think quality over quantity....There are certian shows that will give you a top line of orps like orp club meets , or orp nationals ect. highly recomend going to see those..but the smaller shows . you never know..There was a decent line of blues and blks from ohio and further at our show..one guy took his line of buffs and left..not sure why.....

I never look at it like , Its us against them, or winning is everything ..to me thats not doing the breed any justice, I always look at it like, what is the future of orpingtons..how can I usher it to the next generation..If you like it and keep at it.,,make sure to help kids in your future..get them nice birds and dont treat them like dirt or they will get some other breed..and some orps are very rare and need a little promotion into next gens hands. ..dont get insulted when judge is telling you things..hes there as a guide and also trying to make the future for Orps bright, not bleak..lot of us arnt getting any younger, and the torch needs to be passed on..so enjoy the whole experience....sometimes you might have to take a step backward to take a step forward. so expect that too..

read your SOP, make show choices closest to that model..there are tons of blk orp pics in this thread for comparison...it takes from the very minute they hatch to condition for show, good food, good condition and keep the feathers in good condition..it all counts..keep them powderd all summer so no lice or mites can take up resedence there and start to destroy your feathers..depending on the bird, some are just clean birds, some get poopy butts, those need cleaning ..baby shampoo for blk ones and carefully wash thier faces and soft brush to scrub feet..vetrx applied to comb legs, wattle makes them glow for days..

I hatched a choc lf project boy from Korfus Kluckers last year and finally hatched some chicks from him. Unfortunately he isn't a very nice rooster and I am going to cull him. Here is a pic of him and I am pleased with his size but I don't keep aggressive roosters because of the kids
