The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I'm not talking hatch rates here Piglett. I'm talking about ending up with what you need to improve your line.If you're just raising birds to sell eggs, that's one thing. To show, is quite another thing !

ok , got ya
we were talking about 2 different things

well i myself would find out who has some high quality breeding stock & buy some eggs from them
I am very happy with the chicks that Renie sold me a couple years ago
i now have 3 blue pullets that i hatched out early this year
i an no expert on English Orpingtons
however i can tell that 2 of my pullets have really nice lacing
so i plan to use those 2 in my breeding program along with my splash rooster "Travis"
if i can at least get nice sized offspring with good lacing i figure i am heading in the correct direction

thanks
piglett

I'm curious how the current ones were created

The gold laced Orps around now mostly came from Germany, brought to UK a bit over ten years ago. I don't know precisely how they were made. At that time the silver laced Orps were not about, though maybe they were in other parts of EU. I don't know for a fact, but I'd guess the gold laced were used to make the silver laced.
Sorry I can't be of more help.

Thanks anyway :) I have a suspicion laced wyandottes and laced Cochins were used... I know many gold laced silver laced, & crele sometimes have stubs on their legs...

A question for any who knows

: How do you get better lacing on blues? & How do you get more splashes on the Splashes?

My blue rooster has fairly good lacing I think, but the pullet needs some improvement.
I do plan to breed them together so I am hoping he will improve the lacing, and for the splash..she looks good I just wish she had a bit more color to her like my pullet in the 4th pic that I sadly no longer have, she was killed by a stray dog that came through our property.

I have heard and read that using splash improves lacing. I am not sure since I do not have splash.

Chickengirl, when a bird is getting ready to come into lay her pin bones start to move apart. In case you are not familiar with the pin bones, they are on her underside below the vent; the first bones you come to moving your fingers along her underside from the vent towards her front.
When the pin bones are approx two fingers apart, not long to wait; when they are about three fingers apart expect eggs. :)
