The same will apply as far as the mottling, you will get more by mating 2 that have it. But colorwise a black roo not carrying chocolate, mated to a chocolate hen, will give you all black females, and the males will be black carrying chocolate. (in other words, you won't get any visible chocolate at all from them, but some of the boys will be chocolate carriers)

Female offspring can get chocolate gene from either parent, and they will show it. They cannot hide it. Males have to get the gene from both parents for it to show. If they only get it from one, they are carrying it, but won't show it.

Exactly. And those males would still be carrying chocolate.

I was working with DD on photography & editing. I just had to share this pic of Brick. I think she did a good job, but it certainly helped to have this pretty boy as our model. DH thinks I should pin it up inside the coop for the hens.

I have 1 male:

(Don't you just love his grumpy little face!?!)

...and one female silver laced orp.

Here's the blue buff Colombian orp: Very friendly girl & one of the biggest

Blue laced orp female:
Not sure what she should look like. Perhaps she's a blue laced splash or a project bird.

Blue Laced orp male:

Gold Laced Orp female (with the blue laced male on right)

Here are the 2 blk/lav split orps. Both look female now.

All of the above birds were hatched from eggs from PapasPoultry.

I also have 3 female choc cuckoo orp females at the moment. We simply call them all "Baby Bricks" after their father. They look & act so much like their daddy, Brick, but slightly bigger since the moms were from my giant birds.

This juvenile is right at 12 weeks old. It feathered out much slower than the others. It's comb is still fairly small and very light. it is about the same size as those I'm sure are pullets, and smaller than the one I know is a roo. Opinions please is this is male or female.
Excuse the dirty face....they were eating pears and pumpkins and got grubby.

Because my 6-wk-old males (above) have a lot more red, I think your 12-wk-old must be a female. I can't say for sure, but that's my guess.

Yes, I noticed your beautiful little ones. I also have some that area approximately 8 weeks, and it is obvious which are roos in that batch. They are from a breeder that had a "surprise" in her gold laced breeding and ended up with some that were apparently bred to a split and don't have the "correct" color and patterning. This one (and only) mottled chick just has me stumped! I wondered if the genetics in mottled have something to do with it or what? The others I hatched from these eggs were black, chocolate, chocolate cuckoo, and blue....they show their gender qualities clearly, as do my mixed breed chicks that were hatched with these Orpingtons.

Either way I think it's a keeper! Beautiful and very friendly.
