The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Beth I gave my mottled project to a lovely family that goes to Church with us. I kind of lost heart when a dog came in the yard and killed him while we were in the house. I was letting them free range. Took care of that stray but now I have had to put electric fencing up.
They always manage to get the ones you need.

Kathy your black pullet is lovely.

Yes, that does help. I think 3 of the 5 Black roos are too "leggy," to keep. Although, they are absolutely the biggest birds ever! Honestly, they are as big as my Jersey Giants! I am just gonna have to get them weighed and check that out!

Oh dear, Julie, I am sorry. It does seem like the favorites get it - hope the fence is working!

Kathy- if they are that big, no wonder you are letting the Giants go - wow!

Hey, I was gonna ask you guys what you think of this. I read this old time poultry article (1929? or something). Anyway, it said to separate the males from the females (chicks) when the sex is known, to get maximum growth from them. Something about the males pushing the females away from the feeders when they are young. Have you ever heard of that?

If they are only five months old i would let them grow a bit more. See if there is something need from them to add to your flock. I have two boys from Joy that look leggier than I like but one is very large and Blue and so at five months now I cannot let him go till he gets a little more age on him. I will know by 7 months if he is a keeper. I like his comb and lighter color of blue he is with lacing and think he might be good on some of the darker pullets I have.

I haven't heard it but makes sense. I have separated some of mine this week that are still younger. Try it and see and then give us and update.

Well, after I saw your progression photos I decided to keep these boys until they are 8 months old, and then decide.

I wonder if that is what happened with these 2 blue roos I have .... if they were slighted the feed dish. I have moved them into the layers coop (about a month now), and they are now growing out nicely.

I think I will give that a try, and separate by sexes. See how it goes ....

I give up. I have rebooted. I have emptied my cache. And I still can not upload these pictures. It starts, but never completes. It keeps going back to the upload page.

Well crud, I let the Orps out for pics and now one of my Black boys is missing! I sure hope he shows up tomorrow and that a fox didn't snag him.

He went missing within 1/2 hour after I let them out--for the first time in ages. It figures. I have been out searching the whole area for 1/2 an hour and nothing. Hopefully he is just hanging out and sleeping tight.
