The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I've been hiding in with my Delawares and waiting for these kids to grow up! I am just in love with my black girls looks, they do remind me of your O's, Joy.
I just am dithering about which roo to let go- I don't need three blues at this point- not with just three girls, and I am thinking to keep Impy rather than Gus just because Imp is a little rounder, has a darker eye, and is Minerva's son. Gus is 50%- although I have one American orp black hen with a very dark sparkly eye, and they might make a pair. All three of those roos are BIG.

Kathy, I loved looking at yours- that blue boy of yours is a handsome fellow.

Hey Beth, your kids are looking great! Are you going to make it to the Morganton show?? Would be nice to have a fellow orp person there. They are so scarce around these parts.

I'm going to be doing some research on this.

But I am curious as to Jeremy's question a few pages back. I'll have to try and find it.

My situation is that there are no vets that will even see a chicken in this area. I might have to check with one of the country vets and see if they could at least administer a few drops in the vent.

HenThymes,
I plan on showing up for a couple of hours at least, nothing to show, but I like to leave Delaware literature around, and meet people - will you be there right away in the morning?

I have a GOOD avian vet with 45 minutes of me, I think I will call and see what he says about AI. This is all very interesting!

Yes, I will be there bright and early. I'm showing some of my orps, both LF and bantams.

Maybe we will get a chance to meet.

Sorry Joy, don't mean to hijack.

Right Joy, because except those colors that work with Black, how will the others be expressed?

I was playing with the chicken calculator to try and determine what it would take to breed and visually see the pattern colors, like Silver Laced and Gold Laced... and Mille Fleur (a.k.a Diamond Jubilee...

) With the hypothetical AI to a black hen almost every chick is born black. You would then have to raise and breed the offspring back to their father, with the pattern gene, multiple times and hatch many, many eggs to get any color besides black.

The question is, how would we breed the hypothetical offspring back to their fathers if they are in the UK? Another round of AI? If that's the case, how cost effective will it really be to do it this way? That combined with all of the breeding and hatching of black chicks just to get to a patterned color... I don't know of I have that kind of patience.

I don't even know where to begin theorizing on how to get a visually Buff colored bird. I could be wrong too, using the chicken calculator isn't exactly a sure thing, at least as far as I know.
