The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I know we've bought bulls that were listed as 3/4 and 7/8 percentages, but I don't know how to figure it out....or at least I haven't taken the time to....I just am pretty certain breeding two 50% Uk birds doesn't make it 100% even tho 50% + 50% = 100%

Technically they are still 50%. But that doesn't matter so much as what you cull for. Some birds that you hatch may look 100% American while others may look 100% English. It is a crap shoot the way that the genes splice together.

Clear as mud?

I am the proud "mama" to 12 new BBS English line orpingtons. I got the foundation birds from a great lady in Eastern Washington, most of the chicks are by the 75% Splash roo that came from Julie, and some really nice English lines that came from others of Julies and Joys lines. I have a blue and a black in with Lance, the splash boy. And I have another blue in with my black boy. I am so excited to show off these little ones. They are all doing really well. I know that none of you know me, so you arent really interested, but I am thrilled with these birds and I want to show them off to anyone who will look at them. So I hope you enjoy them.

Anyone with an idea of color on this one? Is it a splash or a light blue?

Well then we all need to get to know you!

Remember, you're talking to the overly obsessed, dreams about chickens typically at least times a week English Orp loving folks here... I blame it all on Joy, at least in my case.

Julie's probably just as guilty as spreading the love of these birds as Joy, too.

Of course we are interested in seeing those fuzzy little ones! I LOVE chick pictures! It makes me so sad that my girls aren't giving me eggs yet so that I can start setting my own. Maybe I need to have a few choice words with those ladies.

I think the chick you're uncertain of the color will be a very pale blue, not a splash. If he or she were a splash there would be more of a silvery yellow color in the chick's down. This is my Edmund as a chick for reference.

Okay, got the word from an "expert" LOL. 50% + 50% = 50%. In order to increase this percentage, you would need to mate it back to a 100% English bird. I guess you could mate back to a 75% English bird and get a slightly higher percentage too, but not sure what that percentage would be.

rsngstr101 - Oh but you are so, so wrong !! Trust me, we are ALL interested, so please feel free to join in the fray and post pictures often - LOTS of pictures !! We love having new folks getting interested in English Orps. As to what Jeremy said, I'm guilty as charged and I love it !!

Welcome, welcome, welcome !!
