The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

I did a second look and i believe it is a cockerel. I am looking at the dark feathering on the back and wings. Blue females do not get a black saddle. Just a late bloomer I guess. Looks a nice color though

Hey Sandy, won't even cost you any oger food. I trimmed mine back in Dec but didn't seriously set any eggs until last week because I was waiting on Thurston to mature more. Set 51 eggs, and thankfully 50 are fertile from 8 hens. I'm sorry I'm so slow responding but not home enough to keep up with thread. Have to ride herd at the chicken ranch you know. Before trim, no fertiles at all out of other roosters.

Jimmy - you old rascal !! Bout time you showed up on here. Now where are some pictures of Rumples..aka...Thurston? Dwain forgot to call you back the other night - I'll make sure he calls tomorrow evening. Good to see you here.

Annie/Andy is bugging me. First glance, I'd say pullet, but I"ve never had any of my girls get a comb that big that quickly. Matter of fact, very few of my girls that are full grown have a comb or wattles that big. My gut says cockerel based on the comb, wattles, crowing and behavior. I did have a hen that was very aggressive and dominant. She never flogged me or ran at me, but she would actually mount the other hens like she was trying to do the deed. She laid very regularly, so I never knew what her deal was - especially since I had 3 roosters at the time.

Gavin - Cute chicks !!!

Jeremy - Did you get your boy from Julie today?

Joy, Neville is still in transit. Julie and I both tracked him today online and I called my PO several times to try and find out where he was. The last thing I was told was that he should be here early tomorrow morning.

ETA: I just read the last part of your post Joy, I hope you have a wonderful hatch!

Give me a call tomorrow when he arrives - I'm anxious to hear how you like him !! I'm so glad you decided on Neville !!! Neville saves the day in the last HP book - and Neville the rooster is saving your day - PERFECT !!

this is piggy, he was a pullet until about 9 months old. these pics he is 9 months, and just started growing those saddle feathers. he never crowed either. its easier to identify him in these pics compared to Andy/Annie but for the longest time he looked like that one, red face and no pointy feathers. I did not keep him....

Hey Joy, I swear when I'm gone a few days and come back to check this thread, I'm so behind that by the time I get to slobber over all the pics and read everything I'm so tuckered out that I drop my cane and bend over to pick it up and just stay there the rest of the evening trying to stand back up. A young lad like me, ha. I will try to get pics this week. Thurston is living it up with his ladies. You know I hadn't thought of it but Mark asked me why he never crows and I realized that I have never seen or heard him crow. I told Mark he doesn't have to crow. He has everything he wants and noone can get to him to challenge his kingdom. You have told me a dozen times when he hatched but guess what, I don't remember. Mark also noticed that his upper beak has split like a finger nail does. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. In my 150 years of raising chickens, I've never seen one split. It's not crooked or anything like that. Gee, it sounds like I'm not aware of anything til someone else notices it. Won't tell anymore stories on myself. Tell Dwain that I'll be at the chicken ranch this evening after my eye appointment.

Jimmy I had a splash pullet damage her beak and looked like a fingernail thing. I think she must have caught it on the fence. It is fine now and you could never tell she had a problem. I wouldn't send her Joy back when she wanted a splash because of it. Thurston may have bumped it or done something that will repair.

I had an OEGB hen whose beak split. the split kept growing bigger so I used a small piece of tea bag and superglued it over the crack to stableize it until it grew out ( my grandma used to do the same thing for a finger nail)

my lemon cuckoo splits by way of green fire ( 12 chicks for $129 special) are growing out nicely they are a month old
