The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Oh I didnt know that. So the buffs have a dilute gene that covers up the Mahogany gene?

this is correct. while Dominant Dilute and Champagne Blonde work to cancel Mahogany, both mahogany and Domiant Dilute were found to be minor Columbain like restrictors working toghether with Co or Db to make a bird devoided of melanin..

pips&peeps :

I thought the reds were supposed to be free from black in the tail????.

that is always the goal, BUT, breeding for this trait is always a challenge. even among professional breeders have some "Peppering" on their breeding stock.

That is red leakage on a Splash, not blue. Lilidikem had a nice Brown Red Orpington he developed shown at Crossroads. Maybe you should look at developing your own line of Brown Reds. Cross him on a Black hen and see what you get. Then post so everyone will know!

Just wanted to pass a long some more information I was able to get on the color on this guy. I sent my friend in England a picture of the cockerel and asked had he ever seen this over there. He said he had and that it was from black roosters that were split to chocolate. (you wouldn't know the roos were split to chocolate because they still have the black color). That he believed the gene to be autosomanal red and would be passed along to the male offspring of the breeding if used in a blue pen. Could be very ineteresting in a project pen though .........

Were you planning on selling her soon?

I want a bird with her type in my flock, the short almost non existent back with that tail angle is what I want to breed towards.

Jeremy, that hen is stunning..almost a perfect example ..I hope you get her..the back feature is a lot just perfect feathering over a very good..well balanced frame

either ...or..shes really a great example of when a bird feathers out over a nice frame near perfectly.I have seen some that have short frame but never feather out like that, or as nice as that..sometimes they have skimpy neck feathers or twisted neck feathers, hers are so balanced makes for a beautiful picture .

She's a step in the right direction for me, but she's a long long way off being perfect!!! I hope to breed much better next year.
