The IMPORTED ENGLISH Orpington Thread

Yup, I wish the Lemons had more fluff and better type, most here in the US that I have seen have a long back and lower tail angle. They lack the "round" look of the English birds that I love so much.

Agreed - I think everyone here maps back to Middleton lines... and honestly - her birds in my opinion could use some work. I have a contact in the UK with Lemons.... but the problem is once the line is here and 'damaged' like this (in my opinion) it is hard for the birds to pay their way over.

Yep - I crossed a few with buffs... they looked "ok"...but not all were barred. The birds that I have came direct from the original importer... so I do have some that I know... (or think) are pure. They sure look better than what I have seen here.

Whoah, I finally hear something of interest. Could this be why some breeders have lemons with dark buff color? Then, they say that's normal?

Yea the barring gene is a sex linked gene kindof like chocolate.
If you take a pure LC over a buff all the female offspring will be LC's but the male offspring will be Split to buff.
If you take a Buff over LC then all the Males will be LC split to buff and the females will all be buff.
If you take a split LC over a buff then half the offspring will be buff and half the males will be LC split to buff and half the females will be LC.
If you take a split LC over a LC then half the females will be buff and half the males will be LC split to buff and the rest will be pure LC.

Not necessary - the tell tell will be in the fewer bars and the tail feathers. There was some breeders that did buy a roo and place it over buffs and were not selling it as a split - but as a Lemon Cuckoo. I admit I did some crosses with an extra roo that I had... it was what people wanted - so I had a separate pen for that.

I bought this Orpington as a 100% English Buff Orpington. The seller told me that she was selling it as a Buff because it showed no barring. I am totally OK with that. However, it was sold to her as a double barred Lemon Cuckoo. She was told that the barring would come later. Well, do yo think it will? He was 4 months old in this pic.
