Need some advice. I don't have a picture of it yet, but will try this weekend. I have a 50% blue English roo that is 6 months old and is showing some "red leakage" in the feathers around his neck. As luck would have it, he is in the top two for type and size at this point of the 9 roosters I'm growing out in this B/B/S 50% pen. It is not noticeable at a glance, but is definitely there and is not from the sun.
I've read some that say you should remove these from breeding and others say to choose type above all else and worry about color later. I'm curious as to other's experiences---would his offspring consistently show this flaw, or is it more like a "sport" that would only rarely show up in future generations?
I just hate to waste such an enormous, typey bird.
Also, while I think I understand that this leakage just happens in some blues, does it signify any genetic difference that would have value in breeding to other colors? Thanks!

If you have limited roo choices and he is your best one overall, use him. Cull hard next generation. and every generation afterward. I does pop up but it will not overwhelm your flock if you use that roo as a stepping stone to better type. I'd much rather battle red tint than poor overall type any day. People who buy your culls for layers will hardly notice unless it is pointed out to them, and even then they will not care most likely. Keep the best, sell or eat the rest.

I guess it must be in the genes of the mentionned bloodline because someone else also told me about it.
As for breeding with him: try to eliminate that flaw by breeding him to totally unrelated hens that don't come from this bloodline. Comb, type and overall apearance is more important than color.

Thought I would post a few pics of young birds I have growing out . They will be 7 and 8 months old this next month. I am very pleased with several of them.

Jeremy this one above is for you. He is a Charlie offspring and has a very short back.......... A very compact little man. I am probably going to keep him and breed him to a particular pullet.

This black cockerel is turning out nice. Has great sheen and nice comb. Broad Chest

This blue pullet has it going on except her coloring is to dark. so Sad

This is my favorite pullet. Her lacing is outstanding
